I agree, built in Windows Defender is sufficient for home use. I would also supplement it with Malwarebytes.

You don't have to install it, just be sure that it is turned on, search Windows Defender and verify.

Windows Defender.

check Windows Defender score here: AV-TEST

Click on home icon in the top middle, then scroll down to the end to see the lovely Windows Defender score

I wouldn't call that piece of crap an AV even! you might as well not be running it at all it's no different than having no protection. it's an antivirus wanna be that does nothing to protect you against new threats, only old ones maybe if you're lucky

You won't get a real answer for which is "best". If there truly was a best solution out there, it's what we would all be running.

Everybody has their preferences, everybody has heard of a problem with whichever choice of app is out there. Every app is going to be able to catch some things, while missing others. New things will slip by some apps and be caught by others. And everybody will have different surfing habits dictating a possible need for better protection.

Personally, my web surfing is pretty safe. I don't search for illegal software, i don't search for serial numbers, I don't pirate music, movies, etc, I don't use torrents for things other than Linux distros...etc. Therefore, I don't need hardcore protection to keep myself reasonably safe.

I therefore use Microsoft Security Essentials (in Windows 7) and Windows Defender (The new name for security essentials in Windows 8). I do an occasional scan with Malware Bytes which practically never finds anything. I surf pretty much exclusively with Google Chrome. This solution has worked just fine for me. Your mileage will vary.

The July 2014 issue of Maximum PC did a comparison of 10 AV apps. It gave top scores to Bitdefender Internet Security, Norton Internet Security. High scores also went to Eset Smart Security and Webroot SecureAnywhere Internet Security Plus. As far as free goes, they gave the top marks to Avira Free Antivirus.

But keep in mind, each of these products has pros and cons. Some add seconds to startup time, some index files and scan more quickly on future scans, while others take nearly just as long the second time around. Some negatively impact file transfer speeds. You have to review each product to determine which is going to be best suited to you.

Good AV has to "stick it's nose" into everything coming into system, be it downloading or opening archives, how to protect otherwise ?.
Good AV will also let you choose what protection you need or what you want but that's your call if you want to skip on some protection. Recently even Kaspersky had doubts about overall protection of all AVs in that industry and predicted capitulation of malware protection if something doesn't change soon.
MS never advertised Defender as ultimate protection, quite contrary but only better than nothing. Ultimately, best protection is between users ears, the rest is just helping and should be treated as such.
I do trust Avast to some degree but I'm not about to start clicking on everything I see on internet or in the Inbox for E-mail. I also use McShield for protection from USB borne decease because by the time I get to see what's inside and check for malware, it can be too late. It's better to use glows than to take antibiotic after (Antibiotic = Malwarebytes etc.)

Will have to echo all other responses thus far. Malwarebytes Premium, Malwarebytes anti exploit tool, and Windows Defender is more than enough firepower.

But the REAL anti virus is your own logic. Don't go to certain sites, research a link before going to it if you are unsure, etc.
