Native Defender is sufficient for home use. Runs at kernel level. If a business running servers it would not suffice.

I agree with Hippsie . . . I'm a home user and have been running Windows 8/8.1 with the native Defender and nothing else for around a year. I'm pretty much all over the Internet without going to those known dangerous sites.

Let me qualify by saying I don't download from sites I know nothing about; I don't download "free" software I should be paying for; I don't download "free" music I should be paying for; etc. That doesn't mean I won't hit one of those drive-by malware sites, but I believe Defender will take care of that for me. It has so far . . .

Agreed!
Very few persons would dine in any scummy restaurant, anywhere in the world, by choice and expect to remain immune from any possible infection;
so, treat the internet likewise and use common sense.

I hate to tell you this, Harish, but although Windows Defender (in my opinion) is as good as it gets, no AV is fail safe. However, having said that, I've been using Windows 8/8.1/Update with Defender for around a year now, and thus far, I haven't been bitten by malware.

As long as you practice safe computing, Windows Defender will continue to do its job. Microsoft frequently adds definition updates and protection against new threats.

Malwarebytes is safe and efficient defense for malware but it is not an AV program.

I use both Malwarebytes Premium and Windows Defender for full protection.

There again nothing is absolute if you do not pay attention to what you are doing.

I would say, "Yes, it's safe for Windows 8.1 Pro."

The best case scenario is to use only one anti virus along with Windows Defender. At least that's what all those who 'know these things' say. :)

Reasoning is that if you use more than one AV (other than Defender) they'll cause problems with your system. That's a Microsoft truism . . .

So, Windows Defender along with only one other AV program, which should be one of the most popular ones.

And now, I will say it out loud . . . I would never use Norton or McAfee (which I think was bought by Norton). OEMs are paid to include Norton AV with their systems!

I agree in principal, Nuccii, but Malwarebytes has gone AV, sort of. Here's what's on the site:

Advanced Malware Detection and Removal of Viruses, Worms, Trojans, Rootkits, Dialers and Spyware

Technically, "malware" encompasses all of the above. See the Wikipedia definition: Malware - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

And down to the nitty gritty, I agree that the free version of Malwarebytes doesn't offer AV protection, although it will clean up your computer once you're bitten, but it looks to me like the "paid" version will prevent "all of the above" from entering your computer. Well, as much as anything will.

Bottom line, though, is that Windows Defender has been sufficient to prevent virus infections for as long as I've used Windows 8/8.1 Update. That's not to say that someone shouldn't use additional protection as long as it doesn't interfere with Windows operations.

And now, since I've said this, watch me go out and get infected . . .

Don't wish this upon yourself, you deserve better.

All I am saying is that I have used both well and have had no conflicts. What one doesn't pick up, the other will usually.
