just bought a new PC a week ago with windows 8.1. As i understand windowd defender should scan daily during the maintenance time but windows defender has not scanned my computer in 3 days and the computer has not been shut down. Is there something i am missing here?

There are tasks in task scheduler that run a quick scan daily (among other things). Scans sometimes get interrupted by other events, like downloading a new virus DB. You can look in Event Viewer under Windows Defender to see what is happening. In mine the scan gets interrupted on a regular basis but then it will run again later in the day and complete.

I don't see the point of daily scans since real time protection is constantly monitoring anyway. Belt and suspenders I guess.

Does it ever do a full scan on its own or does it only do quick scans?
