I don't believe you do - from what I have read, it is as good as many 3rd party anti-virus programs, and believe me a lot easier to deal with if you aren't an experienced user. You say "additional" - don't install another with Windows Defender and try to run both - it's not a good idea to have more than one at a time.

I understood that the built-in security on 8.1 was good so I haven't installed an anti-virus to replace Windows Defender. But I do use malwarebytes pro and super antispyware pro

I run MSE in my laptop on win 7 - its perfect. I ran, temporarily, Defender in 8.1 on my pc, until I had re-installed my 'new' AV - AVG Internet Security 2014, no problems. If you do not wish to use a third party Security, Defender is good, go for it.
