Windows 8.1 Zone alarm/Anti Vir problem

After installing Win 8.1, i installed Anti vir and zone alarm for my anti virus and firewall. Ok, anti vir seems to be active on the anti virus front (i think) but the 'umbrella' remains closed. When i click to see why, it states that windows firewall isn't active and wants to turn it on even though i have Zone alarm. It seems though unless i activate windows firewall anti vir will show as if im not protected?

Any help on this would be great, as i'm completely lost on this coming from Windows xp for the past 10 years pretty much.

Hey Dude, thanks for the info! Atm i uninstalled zone alarm for now, and enabled windows firewall. Does that mean if i turn off the notification with ZA installed the ANTI VIR umbrella will open saying im protected with ZA?

I would use windows defender but heard it's not brilliant recently, but also i've used VIR for a number of years and has never done me wrong/always found to be pretty good.

Thanks for your advice though Dude :)

IMHO, the action center should be able to recognize that "something" is protecting your PC. So, if you have decided to run with just the Windows Firewall, try uninstalling ZA and see if that Avira umbrella pops open for you. There may be a conflict between Avira and ZA but that's just a guess because I don't use either.

Good luck.

Hey my2cents! I think it is something to do with anti vir (tried my best to google) and it not recognizing ZA. It showed the umbrella as down, so you couldn't tell if you were protected by either anti virus or a firewall unless you opened it up. I uninstalled ZA and used windows firewall and all is well (umbrella up)

After using ZA for many years, how does windows firewall compare? I always used to be wary of windows firewalls/antivirus so always had these installed. I would def keep the anti vir as i think its a pretty good programm, do you guys rate microsofts firewall highly?

I'm not sure what antivirus you were referring to, is it separate from Zone Alarm, or are you talking about the anti-virus program that is part of Zone Alarm?
my 2 cents - Personally I do not install the anti-virus component of Zone Alarm, I prefer AVG for an anti-virus, but I do like the Zone Alarm firewall because it lets you customize which program actions you want to allow, which Microsoft does not do!
As a comparison, Windows firewall in Win7 did not flag rpcnet, but Zone Alarm did, I did not find out that it was running until I installed Zone Alarm Free. So I trust ZA more than Microsoft Essentials for Windows.
I'm trying to find out the backdoor problems of Win8 (as a follow-up of the rpcnet problem in Win7), if you want to follow this it is at www.eightforums.com/system-security/44601-what-equivalent-problem-windows-8-rpcnet-win7.html#post371083

The anti virus i was using (am using) is Anti Vir. I only used the firewall for ZA (i liked the firewall for years but not the antivirus) Seeing everything that wants access i do like. I'll have to google a bit more as i dont completely trust microsoft firewall (using currently) Thanks for the heads up!
