Try doing full scans with Malwarebytes and McAfee in Safe Mode. If either find anything, let them remove it. You can also try uninstalling McAfee and downloading the most recent version from their site and installing it to see what happen's.

Run at least a quick scan with McAfee and if you haven't already, run a full scan. Many of the virus/malware programs post an "Computer at Risk" message if a scan is not run on a periodic basis like once a week. This time parameter can also be set with some of the AV programs. Many of the AV programs can also be set to automatically run scans on a schedule set by the operator.
I think your McAfee is probably up to date and if it is not set to automatically run scans and if a scan has not been run in a while that is likely what is triggering the message.
I second the first responder with the recommendation to use Malwarebytes in addition to your current AV program. It is one of the best available and you can download a free version.

There is apparently a problem with program updates on your system. Make sure your update settings are such that updates pass - best is automatic.
If an AV program cannot update the program or especially the definition files, it cannot do it's job. That's what this is all about.

I would dump McAfee at your earliest available opportunity and replace it with Windows Defender, MalWareBytes Pro and CCleaner.

Things that generally trigger those kind of alerts are if either the AV hasn't been allowed to run it's regular maintenance scan or if you are inadvertently clearing the logs by using a cleaning program, such as CCleaner.
And as WHS suggested, there may be a problem with the updates. They may be d/l ing, but not updating due to some internal error because of malware or the AV itself.
McAfee has a "less the stellar record" & it might be a good idea to consider another AV. You can look here & weigh the pros/cons of each AV.

I test AV "in the real world" and MSE/windows Defender does a fine job. I use it at home and it works especially well in conjunction with MalWareBytes Pro and CCleaner Pro.
