    virus

Microsoft called today to tell me that my computer may be infected with a really nasty bug. but I have Norton, but they said this could slip right past Norton. I let microsoft to control the computer and that they did they found there were at least over 34 thousand hits on my files from this thing. and when they went to another place it said most of my files were corrupted.

Microsoft said they could clean up my computer but I needed to renew my software warranty for over $280.00
but being on SSI means I have no money for this. is there anyway to clean this thing out? and then fix the files that were corrupted? I paid $800.00 for this thing but if this is not fixed it could, according to Microsoft, destroy my hard drive.

...please tell us you gave them NO vital information!!!
    Microsoft doesn't call people!

Update: I would seriously think about renewing accounts and passwords, etc. everywhere and optimizing your security settings, including turning off Remote Assistance.

Microsoft will NEVER call you for anything. If you believe you might be infected go here.. Am I Infected? | PC Help Forum

They will walk you through the process. Good Luck!

Maybe already to late. You have been scammed and may, now, have a virus or two. Whilst the party aid they had scanned your computer and found x viruses, that could be a hoax. But, just in case, as Edwin says, change any passwords you have to sensitive data.

Ugh !!!! One of the oldest scams around. Even before the internet my friend in Toronto was called by phone by "Gas Company" about possible "leak in the house", two guys came (without uniform, badge or ID) he left them to go around the house with some instrument, all was clear and hours after they left he was missing a lot of stuff. Another one let uninvited "electricians" check all over the place, they "repaired some things", as he said, and they tried to charge him large sum of money which he did not have on him so he called me borrow some. When I came over I told them that I am electrician and wanted to see what they "repaired" for that money and they left in a hurry without a penny. When I asked him why he didn't call me first if there was a problem, he said they told him that the are from Ontario Hydro and that his problems were "urgent and dangerous" and that they are only ones that can deal with it but took of in a hurry unpaid.
So, do not let anybody in your computer if you can't verify who they are and if you would not let them in the house.

I went to the am I infected? / pc help forum that ectech suggested. and I also went to microsoft as well. not sure wear I got it from, might have got been microsoft, but I downloaded a software that was used to find these bugs that most get through anti-virus
software. and nothing was found. I even got another scan of the same kind from Norton, once again, nothing.

I think these guys were just trying to get money by selling extended warranty's for $280+

    Hello,

That is a typical scam. It is certain that they are not from Microsoft. Here is an article on this: Avoid Phone Scams | Cybercriminal Tech Support Scam | Security Threats

Hopefully they may not have installed any malicious items as they were trying to get money from you. Can you please start your computer in Safe Mode with Networking and then run a scan using the free Norton Power Eraser tool: http://www.Norton.com/npe

    Thanks!

Restart the computer. When the computer starts, press the F8 key on your keyboard continuously until you receive the Advanced Boot menu. In the Advanced Boot options, select Safe Mode with Networking.

Please run a scan using the Power Eraser tool in Safe Mode and see if it detects any threats.

    Thanks!

did not find advanced boot menu. what I got was this. while restarting and pressing the F8 key, in the upper right hand corner of the screen was a very small message F12 for boot options so I pressed and released both keys and the following popped up.

boot mode set to :uefi; secure: boot on
    a line under this
    uefi boot
    windows boot manager
    other options:
    bios setup
    diagnostics
    change boot mode setting
    a line here
up arrow ( up) and down arrow here ( down): move.
    {enter} : boot { esc} : cancel.
