    what AV for new notebook

    hi guys and gals,
I have been reading and researching for a couple days. figured I'd start a thread.
I have a lovely new HP Envy notebook.
    it came with McAfee.
a super smart friend said get rid of it. use Security Essentials Windows Defender.
ok. I did. next thing I know, I'm resetting my notebook back to factory settings with HP support because I got adware. it had installed programs on my computer: clean your reg, shopop.
I discovered I had troubles when I could not log into forum websites. the computer would freeze.
    what fun!!
with the help of people on the sevenforums, I have been using AVG free and spyware blaster and WOT, on my other computers. and doing good.
would anyone please reply, and suggest to me what I should do to protect this computer?
I have read pros and cons about AVG, Avast, Bitdefender, and Kaspersky. I guess I've kinda narrowed it down to them. I don't care if I have to spend some money for an AV. I just never have in the past. but if its worth the money, I'll do it.
    thank you.
    peace,
    Chas

You can set it up the same as your other 'puters.

I would add Malwarebytes and Superantispyware also, I hope you have these on the others also.

    Hi chasmanian,

Welcome to the forum. I can only suggest Vipre Internet Security. I have it on my Windows 7 desktop, Windows 8.1 HP Pavilion laptop and never had a problem with either one yet. In the early days I used to use Norton, but my new laptop came with Norton and I uninstalled it completely, Eventually. On the forum is a post about Norton and Kaspersky, please read and make your own mind up to what to install. Are you sure you removed McAfee completely?? Under advisement I use VS Revo Uninstall, it did not get rid of Norton completely though. I went into the registry and "Search", "Find" and looked for Symantec, (you can see what I found in the post I mentioned earlier. I also used to use AVG Free and paid for. Vipre cost covers me for up to 10pc's and the extra cost, to me, is well worth it. Can I suggest CCleaner, MalWare Bytes, known as MBAM and to make doubly sure, well 4 times sure, Microsoft 'msert'. Msert usually lasts for 10 days and you have to re-download a more up to date version if runs over 10 days, sitting on your desktop/laptop.

There will most probably be a few, "No! don't use that or this one is the best", etc, etc. Try a few free ones, see what suits you best, make sure you completely uninstall every bit of the AV's you don't want and keep the one you want, ie, Upgrade to full, Paid for full Internet Security. btw: You cannot/should not run more than one AV.

Hope this is of some help.

Your very welcome. Please let us know how and what you decide on. It will help others. I do not know how many PC's you have but I have found, with a laptop, desktop and my wife's, and my mobile and a couple of Kindles and Nexus tablet. I didn't have full coverage throughout my house that Homeplugs did the trick, Wi-Fi or CAT connected. I am not trying to teach you something you most probably already know, but got these tips elsewhere.

btw: Any AV 'type' of Homeplug will work with same AV type.

    hey Snapp,
thanks again. I do not a lot about this stuff.
I don't know that I am all that psyched to get Vipre though. I have not read much in other reviews that are making me want to get it.
I do so much appreciate your recommendation though. I am probably wrong. and should probably get it, but I think I'll wait a bit and give it some more time. keep researching.

I use BitDefender on all of my computers. I have never had virus issues, however Botdefender has started to tic me off cus they seem to like to add add's about upgrading now and again. They never used to do this years ago.. but in the last couple of years I get these pop ups every so often asking to upgrade.. or renew.. I am a smart guy Bitdefender.. I know when to renew without having a reminder pop up covering 1/4 my screen. Other then this.. I like bitdefender for the most part.
