Every where I have read gives Avast a 99.7% detection rate which is awesome if you ask me. I run Avast 2014 free and I am looking to fun Avast 2014 Security paid here in the future. I also use Malwarebytes, and used bitlocker to encrypt my HDD.

Honestly a good AV and malware will do you alright as long as you practice safe browsing habits and pay attention to what you put on your machine. In my experience 85% of infections are caused by the user and something they should have thought about more carefully on.

    thank you very much.
have just finished installing AVG free. also spyware blaster and WOT.
AVG free found 16 medium threats. all cookies.
then I downloaded and ran malwarebytes (doing same on other computers now).
    ran AVG again. no threats.
feeling good. Avast was on my list of possibles. I read really good things about it.

I'm running Malwarebytes on my desktop. its found 3 objects so far. (has quite a ways to go, I think.)
any thoughts on what to do about them? should I delete them if given the option?
not familar with how Malwarebytes works.

AVG is pretty good, has a lower detection rate then avast from what I have read but until this last year I ran AVG since 2005. I typically delete all infections Malwarebytes finds.

    it came with McAfee.
a super smart friend said get rid of it. use Security Essentials Windows Defender.
ok. I did. next thing I know, I'm resetting my notebook back to factory settings with HP support because I got adware. it had installed programs on my computer: clean your reg, shopop.
I discovered I had troubles when I could not log into forum websites. the computer would freeze.
    what fun!!
with the help of people on the sevenforums, I have been using AVG free and spyware blaster and WOT, on my other computers. and doing good.
would anyone please reply, and suggest to me what I should do to protect this computer?
I have read pros and cons about AVG, Avast, Bitdefender, and Kaspersky. I guess I've kinda narrowed it down to them. I don't care if I have to spend some money for an AV. I just never have in the past. but if its worth the money, I'll do it.
    thank you.
    peace,

Windows 8 Defemder or MSE for other os's along with MalwareBytes is enough.

The first line of defense is you and your browsing habits.

Windows 8 Defender for antivirus Program
Malwarebytes Pro so you can set it up to scan without doing it manually and it is watching over you
It is cheap enough and you get lifetime upgrades, how can you beat that?

You should be careful while installing software that comes with additional adwares, toolbars, free games.

ESET smart security detects these PUPs.

If you want to go for freeware then 360 interset security, forticlient 5.
