    Is CyberGhost worth installing?

    Hi all,

Is CyberGhost 5 vpn, worth installing? Some of the reviews tell of dropped speeds and loads of disconnections. Apparently it keeps you hidden whilst surfing. Surely with decent Antivirus software and the right boxes ticked in IE11 my surfing will be safe??

I've never heard of it before. It does look somewhat interesting though.

Some like it, some don't, personally I don't. It is true about a drop in speed but this will happen with virtually any service that hides your IP.
I used it for a while and the biggest pain I noticed was how long it took sometimes to connect.

Cyber Ghost is pretty much like a VPN that lets you reach blocked web sites that are either blocked by your ISP or government, just like most of us in the U.S. cannot reach certain torrent or download sites, Cyber Ghost or virtually any VPN service will allow you to circumnavigate that problem and reach those sites by masking your IP address to make it look as though you are coming in from another country that allows access to that site.

IMO, there are Free VPN services out there that do a much better job than Cyber Ghost, personally I recommend SoftEther which you can find here > SoftEther VPN Project - SoftEther VPN Project

Many thanks guys for your input. Call me stupid! Thought I would try it. Don't! It does slow your connection, (and because I live in the UK, out in the countryside), speed is very important. No fibre, only telephone broadband. Anyway, uninstalled CyberGhost last night, 31/01/14. Switched on my laptop this morning to check emails etc, no connection through router, laptop hard wired, by the way, via 'Devolo' Homeplugs. Check all connections, reset router, nothing. In the end, had to do a system restore. Now all OK. I will look at that link, SoftEther though, thanks edee. If its anything like CyberGhost, I will leave well enough alone. I suppose, in the UK we are a bit luckier on the surfing front, (at present), until the Government gets its finger out and changes the law, about surfing, downloading etc. Well I am back up and running and relieved.

Don't run it, it's garbage.... Be especially suspicious of any software that claims to "speed up" anything on your PC...

Cyber Ghost does not claim to speed up anything, it's a VPN that will more than likely slow you down if anything.

As my earlier post, like a twit! I did install it and it completely shot my half decent connection,(for ordinary telephone line) of 16.5Mb/s down to 8-10. Shan't bother with VPN software. I will sort my own out through my router.

Many thanks gentlemen for all your input.

Why would you like to run VPN?
If anonymity/security is your concern but speed not so much, get TorWall, it is transparent tor for all windows browsers. When compared to Tor bundle, TorWall assumes that you configured securely browser.
If you want to maintain current speed and add VPN, you will have to pay for this (while price may vary, it is nor related to the quality of service).
Just getting commercial VPN does not make much sense, there are some very specific requirements for this to work efficiently (e.g. DNS leak, logs, location).

If speed only is your concern, then the only option is to get faster speeds from your provider if available through an upgrade or get different provider. You can't speed up internet with software (caching is lame)

I am/was not after a speed increase, only more privacy whilst online. I know that software cannot increase speed, been there, done that, in the early ninety's. I have setup my own VPN now and mark this post as solved.

Many thanks for your input though.

Depends on your expertise. Myself as a hardcore user since 1992,I highly recommend you do. There are some caveats. I have C*mCast Cable. I subscribe to the 25/5 service. I am not limited in speed using CyberGhost at this speed tier. I consistently get 22 down. I would recommend using L2TP before PPTP or the gui. Cyberghost has decent forums. The vpn app can cause speed issues. Mostly with computer/soc performance and slow initialization & connecting. I have a variety of devices and operating systems. Ideally one would configure router to host vpn connection, but that is another subject and challenge on its own. I prefer AOSP for mobile, Linux Mint 17 or Mac for desktop and lastly Win7(potentially 11). I am looking into the Win11 beta and will post in future. The application could be allot better or worse. I will not rant about how important privacy is, considering modern day criminals and governments.
****For your scenario : Download Free Trial or buy Eset Anti-virus (doesn't slow computer, like Norton/Symantec) The smart edition includes a firewall, advisable and optional. Download & Use CyberGhost (you can search for promo codes for best price & experience). I got a year for around 12$, the free version is fine for basic privacy concerns. The app is as easy as using a vpn can be, from a networking pov. Free edition doesn't support P2P/Torrents keep that in mind, just in case you or any house members/mates do. Your browser is okay as described, but you would be better off with FireFox or Firefox beta with a couple of add-ons installed. I use and recommend adblock, flashblock, ghostery, and no-script (this one is complicated for beginners & can cause more hassle, avoid until devoted to learning). Adblock helps with ads and will allow you to block known malware dimains. Flashblock saves bandwidth & keeps ads from scaring you (Similar to Mobile click to play). Ghostery helps with the massive amounts of cookies and tracking (Privacy Violators). No-Script blocks java, scripts, and other nasties, but can be intrusive and or break pages.****
My mother is 60 and I originally set her up with this same recommendation for years. Besides the point she is now running Mint 17-Mate Edition. Due to her and ignorant family members uncanny ability to accumulate spyware, adware and a few viruses. Which no longer are an issue.
I wish you luck and hope I have given you some insight. This is after all my personal opinion and may differ or even be criticized. Please keep in mind I do computer maintenance and repair for a living. Free advice can't be beat especially if it saves you time and money!
