Was what i saw a bogus popup warning about 'dangers'' ???

    Win 8:
think i was checking mail at RoadRunner - suddenly a popup claiming ''Defender' found potential dangerous items that may cause a crash of my computer'' and - did i want defender to fix problem? - I am using McAfee Internet Security - i was under the impression that ''Windows Defender' is turned 'off' because of another security system in place so how did 'defender' detect anything ?... did i make the right choice by closing out the window for that ''warning'' ? I closed-out my brower & I then did complete full scan with McAfee + scan by SuperAntiSpyware - nothing found ... what happened ? thanks so much

The last time I did work on a system with McAfee installed I believe it will leave Windows Defender still active. So It's possible the two are generating a false positive.

If the system was scanned and reported nothing you should be ok.

To find out, type 'defender' into your search, click it, and see what it says. Most likely it will say deactivated or some such.

I would not recommend McAfee as a preferred antivirus, however. Avast! or AVG are both much better (if the above proves that you did get a bogus pop-up, ask yourself, 'why didn't McAfee not catch it'?).

Defender itself has been scoring low on charts as of late, unfortunately.

What you probably saw was a well sculpted pop up that mimicked the standard warning in an attempt to get you to click on it. If you would have clicked on the yes, it more-then-likely would have d/l ed some kind of fake AV or malicious software into your system. Yes, you made the right choice, & a good one at that.

Malware & Rouge AV companies go to great lengths to make their pop-up warnings look like legitimate ones, usually with lots of warning messages & lots of red. The things practically scream at you: "OMG!!! YOU'RE INFECTED!!! CLICK NOW! FAST!!!" Unfortunately, it fools a lot of people.

To be one the safe side, d/l & run Malwarebytes. Get the free version & do a full system scan. If it finds anything, check the boxes of found items & quarantine them.
