firewall preventing file movement

New laptop running win8. Can't export files to external drives, dropbox, anywhere off the computer unless I disable the firewall. What to do? Getting desperate!

It's the firewall that comes with Windows 8. Should I just disable it and get a 3rd party one? Because I can't see how to reconfigure it to allow what should be a basic feature - doesn't everyone need to copy files to external drives???

Windows Firewall by default shouldn't interfere with any file transfers. Since this is a new laptop I would recommend you go into the control panel and remove any software you don't need.

I know it shouldn't, but it does. When I disable it, the problem disappears. If I can't find how to change its behaviour, I'll have to dump it.

If that is true, then somehow it got configured unwell (perhaps by an installer of some software you installed.) I wouldn't doubt if there is a way to set it to default. Maybe Google can help with that. I dunno.

If that external drive is configured as a "Network drive" which some adapters are known to do, then I can see the problem. If you can find it in Firewall settings you could make an exception for it or put it on "White list"

How would I find out how the external drives are configured? And it won't let me upload to Dropbox either - is that related? BUT I can upload files via FTP... confused :(

Sounds like malware to me. Maybe some kind of DNS hijacking.

Scan w/ Malwarebytes for now.

Thanks, got it, the evil one!
Also, realised that the dropbox issue was an entirely separate issue. All solved.
