new 8.1 PC, McAfee *required* to use MS Office?

A friend just got a Fujitsu FMVA53MB ultrabook. He and I went through the install and chose "No McAfee" on the initial, pre-Windows screen. Once in Windows, after figuring out 8.1 :-( when he clicked on the "Office" tile, he got a pop-up box that said his installation of McAfee was not complete, showed us how to complete the install, and had just a "Stop Installation" button.

Surely this is a big mistake, right? I advised him to have his wife call Fujitsu (we're in Japan) and add to their queue of people presumably asking the same thing (for thoise smart enough to avoid McAfee), but I'm guessing the workaround is to go into Windows security app and make sure it has accepted the Avast antivirus that we installed instead of McAfee. Launching Avast itself says it is working fine.

I have some screenshots taken with my tablet, but they are all in Japanese. Does anyone have feedback or suggestions?

    Thank you.

I like your post. I can tell you're intelligent.

Best thing to do I presume, is to uninstall Office normally. Install it yourself (even if you have to find it.)

Then do Windows Updates (after telling it to do so for other software than Windows.)

I do not know the exact steps you took or the exact install media you've used, but it can not possibly be a bad idea to run the McAfee uninstall tool for good measure.

McAfee LiveSafe ? in System Security
Hey all, I was wondering what you all think of the McAfee LiveSafe suite... I have like 10 computers, so the $79.99/year fee for unlimited licenses is really appealing. McAfee security in System Security
I picked up a Lenovo Flex 15 lap top and it has McAfee security installed. Being brand new to Win8/8.1 I don't now if this is a resource hog or not. I run MSE with MBAM and SASW on my Win7 machines. This McAfee appears to run pretty good, but I'm just starting to learn W8.1, so far I like it,...

I have one desktop and two laptops that are up for McAfee antivirus renewal soon. All three OS's were recently upgraded to Windows 8 Pro. I'd be curios to hear what your opinions are on this topic: 1. Should I renew McAfee for these three computers for a grand total of $96.96 (USD incl...
I did a Win 8 Upgrade over a Win 7, and chose the option to keep programs and data. I thought this would keep Office 2010 running without problems. But when starting Office 2010, a warning came that a system change had been detected and reactivation was required. Luckily I could find the code but...
