    McAffee vs Norton Internet Security

have a new pre-loaded McAfee Lenovo PC ... can transfer my NIS at end of 'trial' or keep McAfee in place - any opinions about which plays 'nicer' with Win 8? thanks in advance - Edythe

not sure which is the best

I got my Win 8 machine last June, upgraded to 8.1 when it was released and not had any issues with Mcafee so far

whether to use McAfee or Norton. When I bought my pc; the first thing I did was uninstall Norton, same for two laptops. Norton is VERY heavy software to use and is takes over such a large amount of the relevant system. Not only that but not many people know but it plants a spyware software hidden in the symantec folder which is NOT deleted on uninstall. but it can be manually deleted if you know its there. norton then continue to monitor your usage even when its not in the computer.

I now use Defender, good kit and FREE

Just use the defender from Microsoft. It's free, does a good enough job and uses a LOT less resources. But the biggest thing is just don't do anything stupid like blindly clicking you're brains out. I haven't seen a virus on a machine of mine for over a decade using either no anti-virus or the bare minimum from Microsoft. It you stay away from porn sites, don't know what you are doing with warez sites, think before clicking a link to will be fine

Defender is NOT a 'bare minimum' from MS any more, its quality protection nowadays and costs nothing. Win 7 still uses MSE, but Defender in 8 and 8.1 is even better than MSE, in fact its replaced it. My daughter laptop and mine, both win 7 run MSE with zero problems and I buy a lot of games from online.

Well, could you install less than defender? It comes along with the ride

I use NIS since years. Have not yet found any better AV program. Very light, does scans when PC is idle and does not bother you.

McAfee I always uninstall first thing when I get a PC with it - even when it is a free 24 month license like on my last PC.

hi - don't know if i made correct decision - ie staying with pre-installed McAfee (that was upgraded to the ''new'' 3-user version of it's ''internet security-version yesterday '').... i just didn't want to deal with transferring my current Norton NIS that is 'sitting' in my just-retired' computer ... if things don't work with McAfee i can always uninstall it and have NIS downloaded ... any input is welcome - thanks so much, Edythe
