Hey, I have windows 8 (not 8.1) Pro and I have been using avast 8 and I was wondering if it's safe to upgrade to avast 2014 or does it still have problems with windows 8. Thanks in advance.

I use aVast 2014, but with Windows 8.1 Pro X64.
The problems with 8.1 have certainly been sorted (apart from a power management settings issue).
As far as I know there should be no problems with aVast 2014 on Windows 8 but it may be prudent to check the aVast support forum.

I see, would windows defender and zonealarm firewall be a good combo?

Why would you want to use Zonealarm firewall when the Windows Firewall is more than competent?

Honestly, I havent' used ANYTHING Zonealarm since Windows 98.

Windows Defender should suffice for you, It is actually a combo of Microsoft Security Essentials, the old Windows defender malware detector and Windows Firewall re branded. By turning on Windows Defender in Windows 8 you are activating all 3. For an extra layer of protection I would add Malwarebytes

I see no reason whatsoever for a third party firewall being added.
