I don't think that AVG is running properly yet on Windows 8 and am using MSE myself, No OS is safe without some form of protection and Malware bytes is good but it is not a complete solution and you cannot rely on it alone. If it has found suspicious objects I would suggest quarantining them first and posting the logs here so someone can look at them.
Another option is to scan the drive from Windows 7 with an antivirus that you know works and can trust and see if it picks up any problems.

Win 8 is as safe as your browsing habits are. But as Pooch says, use MSE. That works well. AVG is a dog anyhow. They had a lot of problems recently.

Run SuperAnti Spyware as a scanner. It tells you what it finds - usually a lot of tracking cookies that are benign.

Defender and MSE is two different things. But they do use the same process as the base (MsMpEng.exe). when you install MSE, you cannot have Defender.

Why install MSE on Win8 DP 8102 when Defender is built in and is essentially the same thing?

It's a waste, in my opinion.

A waste of what? space on my SSD? I have 73 GB free so I don't think so. Using your own argument if they are the same where is the problem? I like to think of it as a personal choice and will do what I like on my Personal Computer (pun intended), but you are welcome to your opinions and thank you for letting me know :)

I proffer it is a waste because installing MSE is entirely unnecessary with Win8 DP 8102.

Certainly, Pooch, you can do whatever you like. If you like performing unnecessary actions and installing redundant programs, well, have at it to your heart's content.

Installing MSE on the WIN8 DP 8102 is unnecessary and an overly redundant action. Period.

As far as I read Windows Defender was an "updated" version of the current MSE in Win 7. I just read that cause I was wanting to install MSE.

I thought is was the other way around - MSE was an update of Defender.

I meant for Win 8. For Win 7 its true that MSE is an "improvement" or a total different thing that is better than Windows Defender. But Windows 8 it seems basically that Windows Defender is MSE with the name Windows Defender. I have yet to run it, but it's being update constantly..once a month or more maybe so it can't be that old Windows Defender. Their goal is getting all malaware, spyware, etc protection protection into that program i think
