I would lend him some ammo too.
Anyway, I use Avast last couple of years now and have updates 5 times a day sometimes, I don't think they would bather with such support for a free product if they did not deem it necessary. With so much new mallware showing up all the time why does not MS have such practice ?
Anyhow. I think I understood MS right, that they never claimed that their protection is the only thing one should have and that it's the best there is.

Seems to be pretty effective when paired with mbam pro:

I have been (and still am) using MSE, along with MBAM Pro on all of my personal computers and recommending it to those whose PC's I work on. I haven't seen a virus get through yet, but occasionally a piece of malware does get through...

What are you using for a firewall, Win firewall? I'm using the windows firewall with tinywall and it seems to do a good job. I have tested eset, norton and a few others and all seem to fail even basic leak tests like this one: https://www.grc.com/lt/leaktest.htm Windows firewall with tinywall has no problem passing it.

I have a hardware firewall (Cisco), so I don't use a software firewall on the server and clients on my LAN at home...

MSE has always been good to me, never really had a problem. I'll continue to use Windows Defender 'cause common-sense comes into this a lot.

    Hi there
Why are we bothering to discuss this here -- MSE is for WINDOWS 7 -- while some of the same engine is used in W8 - the mechanism is totally different as the security is part of the kernel. In W8.1 it's better too.

    Cheers
