    Windows Defender still running?

I was under the impression that Win Defender is completely disabled when another AV (Norton in this case) is installed. And in fact it will not start when I search and try to run it. But I see in Task Scheduler that the scheduled scan "operation completed successfully" this morning. So is it running the scan or not? I know I can delete the task, just trying to understand if that needs to be done on all the Win 8 computers around here.

It might be part of the Windows 8 scheduled maintenance task

Running out of memory when running overnight. in Performance & Maintenance

Why does Windows Defender want to scan my PC so often? I have it scheduled to scan daily at about 2:30 AM. Sometimes after about 4 hours it says I need to scan.
After around 5 minutes of my system sitting idle, MsMpEng.exe kicks in running about 50% CPU and keeps running until I start using my laptop again. I have no idea what it's doing. Or how to stop it doing it. Has anyone come across this problem before? If so, any ideas for a fix? Many thanks ...
I ran the software once - and pressed the button that is supposed to purge all the detected "Adware.Tracking cookie" and stuff like that, and so it should be all gone, but it runs everytime I reboot the computer and it is again showing 'how many items found' and increasing, so I'm not sure if it...

I can tell WD is a streamlined smaller version of MSE. Is this enough to be the sole AV? How can I pin its icon to the taskbar? (I miss the reassuring green icon of MSE next to power and wi-fi signal icons )
