    gateway

    Hello
I just installed a new ISP gateway to replace the old modem and my router.
It works nicely but I had a security question.
Should I leave it as is with the data on the bottom of it as my 'key' etc. or should I get into the router and set up a password and new key like my old router?
I am just an average skilled user so I do not want to get into trouble but do not want to sacrifice security either.
    Thank you
    Peter

If there's active WiFi with the router set it's security on highest level,if wired only than not much is needed.

    gateway

    I appreciate your reply.
I finally remembered to enter the router part of the gateway using 'admin' and 'password'.
It showed a big graph saying I have weak security and there were choices for medium and high.
On the left was a "wizard".
By surfing I found you enter it with HTTP:// in the address bar. However, when I changed the level from weak to medium or when I clicked wizard, it said it does not respond to an HTTP command.
I was good with my old router and would love to get a regular modem and use my router but maybe the dropping off I experienced was due to my router.
Is there any help you can give me with this Arris gateway from Comcast so I can configure it to provide good security?
    Thank you
    Peter

Sorry, no experience with Arris HW. I mostly use Tp-Link, D-link and such routers on which I set WPA-2 security and sometimes even switch off SSID bradcasting. WPA-2 is pretty difficult to penetrate. Only drawback is that when connecting a new device you have to supply password on it but it pays if you have nosy neighbors and the ones that want to "share" your internet connection and steal your bandwidth or worse. If somebody does that, they can do things on internet that can get you in the trouble and it would be quite a task to prove that it was not you. That is why it is important to have good security with WiFi.

Thank you for sticking with me, Mike.
    I finally got into the router part of the gateway and there are some choices for the firewall;
    1-no security, 2-high, 3-medium and 4-low.
Next to each it says what happens if you select it. I chose medium because the next step up would not allow Skype P2P and others to work. It seems tight. I may use high yet - do you have an opinion?
I could change it when I ever use Skype which is seldom. I don't know what P2P(person to person) is as far as I am concerned as I have a private network with the router my desktop and the printer.

I managed to establish a password to enter the router but see no opportunity to change the admin or user.

There are advanced settings I am not familiar with, unless you thought you could help there and if my settings appear inadequate.

There is a 12 digit key one must use to connect also.
I noticed the firewall utilized WPA/WPA -2, TKIP, AES.

If you can provide model number of that router, maybe I can find a manual for it and see if there's some settings you can change.

    I have a model # for Arris 2011, mod = TG862G/CT.
I found some information but it means little to me.
Thank you for your help. I will have Comcast send the bill to you for doing their job.

Ok, I downloaded the manual and there were no settings for WiFi in it and it referred me to some other, separate part that I could not find. However found this link to the youtube that explains how to setup password for WiFi connection. It might be easier for you to follow specially if you already know it's IP.

I am sorry you had to go through all of this but thank you. I do not see a link - did you forget it by chance?
I have been in the router and except for advanced, I have a password, WPA/WPA2,TKIP, + AES. The advanced seemed to have to do with port forwarding etc.
I also have a key that the laptop needs to connect.
It seems without going into deeper details that the bases are covered.
I remember on my own router that there was an 'N' which was another security device.
Again thank you for your help.

Looks like address shortening did not work as expected but if you set a password on WPA-2 security that's about as far as you can go on the router itself without compromising usability.
