I am finding lately that Defender is off and I have to start it manually. I thought Defender would remain switched on unless I switched it off. Any ideas?

In that case, you might scan your system with something like Windows Defender Offline at boot to help make sure that your system is clean.
In addition, check to make sure that Windows Defender's real-time protection is turned on as well.

I have checked that Defender's real-time protection is turned on and set to automatic. I'll see if it continues to turn itself off.
