Hi all

On the Hotel "Wired" Network where I logged in I got a whole load of "Device Install" messages

But What are THESE !!!!!!!!! They look like computers attached to the Network

I've got Firewall enabled with MSE turned on but looks like I'm picking up other users Media streamers.

What's going on here --and should I worry about this.

Shame if security is compromised as I'm rather liking W8.

Running W8 32 bit version.

I'm not so much sure that that's a problem on your end, as it is on their end!
I'd say it's just looking for a media-extender driver or something that Microsoft hasn't fully furnished for Windows 8 yet. I wouldn't be concerned that you can see others' computers, but I'd be concerned if they can see yours.

I agree... an OS in general isn't going to look for a driver unless it sees a new device. W8 may be keen on picking up things that we took for granted with XP/W7 (or vista...haha) but I'd be more worried about what others see on your machine than vice-a-versa.

Can you duplicate a similar situation and report back? Have a wife, girlfriend, child, (boyfriend), etc. that you can have turn on their W7/W8 PC and see what they see on same network?

I would be very worried in any situation, if W8 is recognizing neighbour networks as devices, what else may be going on with the new OS.

If it happens with any other WDP rig then it is surely a big security flaw........... a preview anyway

If given enough time collectively we could pick this OS apart, and that's what Microsoft expects us to do....I noticed the Windows8 machine made it's self at home on my home network...without the password....

Actually this seems just like the time i got hamachi in my computer (i hate routers) anyway, those computers are able to see everything you have shared with your home group (or if not assigned, it's default). The best solution for now would be:

1. open your libraries

2. select them all

3. right click and select 'share with'

4. select 'share none'

that will prevent people to see your files, i believe that you have those computers in (at least) connected to your computer via router / lan / network creator ...thingy... like hamachi / you have a virus. you can try to look out for their IP's and locate their cities to have any clue where they are. and maybe why.

other solution is to open your network and sharing center, and look for network cards, if you have other network thing connected somewhere else creating a LAN. (check also if you have accidentally connected to wi-fi network via wireless)

Hotel wire? it's a wi-fi, via wired connection, and those computers ARE your LAN for now, i see my home's every other computer too (all thought i know those computers)

WTH??? How'd you do that Jimbo?? I look at my network, and there's only the PCs that I own showing in it.
I even went to my local library and tried it (With their permission of course) and only shown my laptop. The
only reasonable thing I can figure is you allowed "Network Discovery" outside of your personal domain.

For Punishment for that "Makes Jimbo watch in an infinite loop of StoneCold Steve Austin as he joins The Vince McMahon's KMA club!"

Hi there
Note I was connected vire WIRE not Wireless -- using a Wireless connection problem was solved.

Seems only to cause problem whan you use a WIRED connection (other machines also on WIRED connection too).

I wouldn't be worried. I've been there and done that. Unless if your network profile is set to public, no one else can access your stuff from the network. Even then, for that to happen, you'd need to be in a HomeGroup to share files. And the device installs, I'm guessing some might be printers. I know in Windows 7, that happens when there are networked devices, but it doesn't install them automatically.
