    Bitlocker

Hey! I activated Bitlocker for my Operating system drive on a Windows 8 machine. But when starting the process I only can back up the recovery key. I have no dialog to choose how to unlock the drive. Thus even though Bitlocker is running, the PC can be turned and windows can be accessed by common user authentification. No password prompt appears at an early instant of the boot-process. What's wrong?

Hello Winny, and welcome to Eight Forums.

What brand and model numbers is your computer or motherboard?

You could either have a motherboard that has a TPM that is used to unlock BitLocker automatically at startup, or you selected to use a USB flash drive instead of password to unlock BitLocker.

Please go ahead and post a screenshot showing what options you have for your C: (OS) drive in "BitLocker" Control Panel" like below.

Wouldn't this be quite bad since the data are not protected as the whole PC is lost?

Unfortunately when Bitlocker was activated there was no dialog to select the way to unlock. Hence "change password" and "remove password" are missing in the BitLocker Control Panel.

If this is for a TPM, you would be able to set to have to enter a PIN number to unlock BitLocker at startup.

Please go ahead and post back with the requested information from above for us to know what is actually be used. Afterwards, we'll be able to more accurately help get you setup with a password or PIN for BitLocker.

Here is the reason why I couldn't choose the PIN prompt for decryption:

I first had to enable the local group policy "Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\BitLocker Drive Encryption\Operating System Drives\Reguire additional authentication at startup" which was turned off by default on my system.

Confirming this and re-running BitLocker I now can choose how to unlock the device.

However I also had to change local policy "Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\BitLocker Drive Encryption\Operating System Drive\Enable use of BitLocker authentication requiring preboot keyboard input on slates" since my touch screen is not available in the pre loader process.

However since my USB keyboard attached to the slate (surface pro) is not working on the Bitlocker's unlocking screen I cannot use this option. This sounds quite strange to me but maybe someone has a hint?

Since this is a tablet, do you not get an on-screen keyboard open when you tap inside the field to enter your password?

No the screen keyboard is not available at this instant of time (i.e. pre loader).

You might go with using a USB flash drive to unlock the drive instead. This way if it's not attached, the drive will not automatically unlock.

Most BIOS/UEFI settings will have allowing to recognize USB devices at boot by default, but you might double check to make sure your BIOS/UEFI settings are set to enable this or it will not see the USB at boot.

Yes, this might be an option. I'll try it.

However, at the moment the system is unlocked automatically at startup. - Actually this has no big sense.
