MSE stopped with Win 7 and has been replaced with built in Windows Defender on Win 8. 3rd party anti virus all have pros and cons and are a matter of choice whether to install them or not. Often they will react differently on different computers.

I personally use only WD and Malwarebytes Pro only. They have served me well and have had no problems. There are many posts in this forum showing the benefits of one or the other. As always, use common sense when visiting unknown sites and don't open unsolicited email attachments.

From my observations, many people don't even realize they have Windows Defender installed and running, because it has neither icon in the notification area nor a context menu entry. Typing defender on the start screen reveals it.

MSE and Windows Defender use the same engine and definitions, so trying to install MSE on Windows 8 is pointless.

To be more specific here...

The reason 8 told you MSE wasn't compatible is because it is already incorporated (included) in Windows Defender, thus there's no need to install it again.

As for which AV is best, there are many many opinions on this so it's best to do some research. I personally use Norton as my AV; but, as I said, there are lots of opinions out there so good luck in which ever you choose.

Peace.

To be more specific, the incompatibility message comes from the MSE installer, and not from Windows 8. Here's a quickie from google image search http://www.firstever.eu/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/MSE-uninstall-error-on-Windows-8.png

The funny thing is that it actually tells you that Windows Defender is there, but sadly lots of people can't read :)

It's called "inference"

And I fail to see what was so wrong with what I said??? - Microsoft Security Essentials - Microsoft Windows

Have a good day :sarc:

You didn't say anything wrong. But you wanted to be more specific, so more specifically the message comes from the software, and not from the system, as your message implies.
The reason 8 told you MSE wasn't compatible
Thanks for finding the specific term, although the end result is exactly the same whether they can read or just under [DEL]influence[/DEL] inference :) Have a nice day too ;)
