    Windows Defender

I can tell WD is a streamlined smaller version of MSE. Is this enough to be the sole AV?

How can I pin its icon to the taskbar? (I miss the reassuring green icon of MSE next to power and wi-fi signal icons )

You can pin icon to taskbar by going on C:\Program Files\Windows Defender
right click on MSASCui and pin to taskbar.

It has no command to taskbar....only to start and create shortcut to desktop.

Oops...indeed it has pin to taskbar command. Thanks

But it does not show on taskbar even when properties shows command to unpin from taskbar(meaning it is on taskbar, but it is not).

The only time it shows on taskbar is when it is actually scanning and not in notification area then disappears when WD window is removed from screen at the completion of scan.

Hello pappi, and welcome to Eight Forums.

No worries. If Windows Defender detects anything, it will alert you in the notification area.

If you like, you may like the context menu from the tutorial below to help make using Windows Defender easier to use in Windows 8.

    Hope this helps,

Hi Brink. Thanks for the welcome.

I clicked the spellcheck while writing you a reply and iespell announced it works only with 32bit browser and suggested several spellcheck software providers including CNEt(the only one I recognize). Installation with CNEt apparently carried one spyware(infoatom) which WD instantly picked up and removed.

It seems W8 supported IE10 browser has only 64 bit (in contrast to Vista's IE9 with two, the 32 bit being the default browser). So, do you know any safe provider of spellcheck software for 64 bit browser?

Going back to the WD cascading link you suggested, I am embarrassed to admit I am clueless what it was about.

Anyway, I had created to the desktop a shortcut icon of WD from Control Panel for instant access any time I feel finding out if WD is currently working...or not. I miss the reassuring presence of MSE green icon on the notification area of taskbar.

In 64-bit Windows 8, IE10 is 64-bit, but the tabs are 32-bit by default.

If you add the context menu from the tutorial, it gives you shortcuts to the various tabs in Windows Defender when you right click on your desktop.

If Windows Defender was turned off or not running, you would get a message from Action Center in your taskbar notification area like below to let you know.

Thanks for the tutorials. They are didactically very helpful.

I think installing WD shortcut icon on the desktop has the same functionality as incorporating WD in context menu.

Back to W8 forum spellcheck feature: how do I utilize it without 3rd party installation of spellcheck software? In other words, how do I navigate W8 forum site with 32 bit IE10 browser? Would disabling protected mode all together disable 64 bit browser all together so I would end up surfing always with 32 bit?... (which I gather is more vulnerable to evil techies). Or is there is an easier way to surf W8 forum site with IE-10 32 bit browser without unchecking the protected mode box ?

The tabs in IE10 open in 32-bit mode by default. No need to do anything else.

Windows 8 also has a built-in spell checker that's turned on by default.

Without having done any changes from setting this 3 day old HP Envy dv7 came with, this is how I surf: I click IE icon which opens my www.msn.com homepage(presumably on 64 bit browser). Then I click W8 Forum site from Favorite folder (in star icon cascade menu) which I presume opens W8 Forum site in 32 bit browser. And then I type a reply to your reply. Before submitting, I click spellcheck. And spellcheck does not work. (I get a notification that I need to download software from third part providers which I am not wont to do in fear of being spywared(which already happened, thanks to CNEt). So...please let me know why I cannot make W8 Forum's spellcheck work. What did I do wrong? (I realize this is no longer a WD topic, I apologize. Should I start a new thread...on this problem with W8 Forum spellcheck?)

BTW, while typing, all misspelled words are automatically being red-color underlined but I cannot correct them with format's spellcheck. It keeps announcing it works only with 32 bit and I should download software from 3rd party providers. Is it possible spellcheck is already working and I should not do anything before submitting(implying submitted text will be auto-corrected to be typo free?)

BTW, with Vista IE9, I could tell which browser is operating by just clicking "about IE"...32bit is not specified but 64 bit is. With IE 10, there is no 64 bit specification(I dunno if unspecified "about IE" notification means the browser is 32 bit).

Sorry about being so not PC skilled. But I am progressing.
