not quite sure what your question is[you use win8 and win7 in your post ] ,but i use windows defender on win8 and it updates almost daily for me ,or whenever there are updates ,
just so i could keep a close eye on windows defender, i went to ,c:\program file\windows defender, and found its .exe file [\MSASCui.exe]and right click on it and drug it to my desktop taskbar ,and pinned it

    edit -
actually all we need to do is go to start and right click to show all apps, and right on the app choose pinto desktop or to the taskbar

    >>Sorry to hear that. I went back to 7 for a day and really missed 8 which is quick and steady here. Maybe a "Refresh" if you have time for the updates!

Solved Windows 8 Power Options gone? in General Support
I just noticed that when I go to the Power Options that the options are missing. It says the Power Plan is missing or unavailable or something such. One answer said to do a refresh or reset of Windows 8. Isn't that a bit drastic? Is there no way to do it by tweaks. I did that refresh once and lost...
