Solved how do turn windows defender on.x

I have recently bought a new laptop and the free months trial of mcafee is due to end in 2 days time I have been told to turn on windows defender but if I click on it it just says defender is turned off everywhere I have looked for help just says to click on it and click settings but there is nothing which says that all it says is close can someone please help because I don't know what to do and if you can help can you please use basic simple instructions because I am really struggling many thanks if you can.x

Windows Defender is turned off by default when a third party anti virus program is installed. When you remove McAfee, it will become active once again.

Windows Defender shuts off when an AntiVirus program like McAfee is installed.

If both programs were running, they would conflict with each other, protection would suffer, and resource usage would be very high.


Here are some "...basic simple instructions..."

Try uninstalling McAfee by pressing the Windows key, and the X key at the same time.

From the menu that appears, select: Control Panel

In Control Panel, select: Programs and Features

From the list of installed programs, select McAfee, and then select: Uninstall (at the top)
A prompt asks for confirmation...agree if that is what you wish to do.

When done, restart the computer, and see if you can start Windows Defender.

Please post back on the outcome.

thank you for your help I have uninstalled mcafee but when I click on defender it doesn't give me any options to turn it on it still just keeps saying defender is turned off and don't know how to turn it on please can you help again because now mcafee is not on here I don't have anything on my laptop and am worried about it.x

have just this second managed to turn it on thanks for your help but can I just ask now that it is turned on do I need to get something else on my laptop or is it properly protected now many thanks.x

Was just getting ready to provide you further instructions on removing McAfee.

Microsoft includes Windows Defender as an AntiVirus and AntiMalware program in Windows 8.

Depending on what you do, it should offer adequate protection.

BTW, also have a new laptop with Windows 8, and, Windows Defender, as well as the Windows Firewall, is what I use.

You can always try it for a while, and if you do not reach a good comfort level with WD, then, come back, and we will suggest other options.
