Windows Defender 0x800106ba error

  1. #31

I haven't actually tried any scans.

However, the real-time service itself is terminating itself from time to time, giving this sort of thing in Event Viewer, System log:

The Windows Defender Service service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 2 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 60000 milliseconds: Restart the service.

Only happening in the last day or so.

At the same time the Application log gets:

Faulting application name: MsMpEng.exe, version: 4.0.9200.16384, time stamp: 0x5010a938
Faulting module name: unknown, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x00000000
    Exception code: 0xc0000005
    Fault offset: 0x0000001b2291b30a
    Faulting process ID: 0x1bbc
    Faulting application start time: 0x01ce1d7b3018a577
    Faulting application path: C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MsMpEng.exe
    Faulting module path: unknown
    Report ID: c5998aa3-896f-11e2-bebb-f04da2547ed9
    Faulting package full name:
    Faulting package-relative application ID:

So I'd spent some time doing various checks of file system integrity and run a full memtest, but now it looks like the last update gave Windows Defender a poison pill

Yes, that's what prompted me to look in Event Viewer.

This forum has saved me from the pain of further investigation, resetting, reinstalling, hair pulling, swearing and making little effigies of people to stick pins in.

I, too, updated my definitions this morning, but no change to Defender behaviour. I've decided to get Bitdefender Total from Amazon and install that instead.

Many Thanks, indeed the latest definitions file does fix the issue...I wonder why Microsoft isn't pushing it out already!?

Thanks yeppe! The update must be downloaded and installed, an update via windows defender does not work.

Thank you, Yeppe. I should have read your earlier advice more carefully. Downloaded, updated, ran scan and.......sorted.

Hi all, I've just done a clean install of Windows 8 and I updated the definitions via Windows Update. When I do a full scan or a quick scan, everything works. But I'm still on virus definition 1.145.1483.0. I've checked the Microsoft website and the latest defintions are 1.145.1490.0.

Strangely enough, Windows Update tells me everything is up to date.
