I just uninstalled the trial version of Norton and I am unable to turn on Windows Defender. I have seen this problem repeatedly in the forum, but I'm still not sure how to get it corrected.
Please note that I am very Windows 8 illiterate, so no explanation can be too basic :confused:.
Thank you in advance!

I didn't use the Removal tool the first time.
I downloaded and used the removal tool and then went to action center in the control panel and was able to turn it on.
Thanks so much for your help!

I ran the Norton Uninstall 5 or 6 times

drealeade,

Got to ask you a few questions...

How did you uninstall the trial version of Norton?
Was it from Control Panel > Programs and Features?

Did you use the Norton Removal Tool to make sure all of it is gone:
https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/kb20080710133834EN_EndUserProfile_en_us

Is there any other antivirus program installed on the computer that may conflict with Windows Defender?

I ran the Norton Uninstall 5 or 6 times and still can not activate windows defender.

I have no other antivirus installed.

For each time I try to activate Windows Defender, I receive the following (reward?). please see attachment

trm,

Let's do the following...

…please download Security Check:
http://screen317.spywareinfoforum.org/SecurityCheck.exe
Save it to the Desktop.

Double-click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the on-screen instructions (on the black screen)

When done, a Notepad document opens automatically: checkup.txt
Please post the contents of checkup.txt in your reply.

~~~~
Next, try to to re-enable Windows Defender as follows:
Open Windows Defender.
Select the Settings tab.
Check: Turn on real-time protection (recommended)
Click: Save changes
Click the Update tab > Update button
When done updating, go to the Home tab and select: Quick Scan
Is Windows Defender staying on now?
~~~~
If not, also, do the following:

Please download Farbar Service Scanner
Save to the Desktop
  • Make sure the following options are checked:
    • Internet Services
    • Windows Firewall
    • System Restore
    • Security Center
    • Windows Update
    • Windows Defender
  • Press: Scan
  • FSS creates a log, FSS.txt, on the Desktop.

Please provide the FSS.txt in your reply.

open "Services.msc" and make sure the Windows defender (scroll down and find it) is enabled on automatic. If it is not, correct it and reboot. See if you can now restart the defender.

I read about as much as I could stand on this subject and jumped through the hoops (Norton removal tool, sf /scannow,, services.msc, etc.) trying to turn on Defender on an 8.1 Gateway PC. No luck. It's a travesty that these vendors allow this to go on. I finally had to install Panda Free AV, and now will have to put up with their constant badgering to buy something I don't need. I could nuke the device, but there's a chance I'll have the same problem after two days of restoring my computer.

Here's a suggestion: My new rule is to never buy any device with Norton A/V already installed, because there's a chance I will end up with a partially crippled unit. Keep that in mind and while you're at it, repost said suggestion every time you get the chance, and maybe someday Norton will wake up. I will never buy anything from Gateway, that's for sure.

You can remove preloaded software (for example, Norton AntiVirus) from a new computer, before Windows 8/8.1 installation is finished. This can be done even when you select the Reset your PC option.
