Hi,

Was Defender and your windows firewall switched on? When I first got my new computer, I had to uninstall the bloatware that calls itself Nortons and manually turn on my built in anti virus. Also, you should check your user account control settings.

I don't really see any reason in installing any additional anti-virus that you need to pay for. Windows 8 comes with Windows Defender by default and Windows Firewall does what it's supposed to. Unless you're intentionally visiting unusual websites and installing malicious software you should be fine. Although I do recommend installing Malwarebytes just for scanning the system once a month, just in case.

The best part? It's all free, you don't need to pay money.

I love Windows Defender. The ease to use it and the fact that it will keep your pc clean and WON'T screw up the performance is wonderful!

So you might want to try installing this program if it's not installed yet and perform a full scan.

Another option is to try the McAfee Stinger. This is NOT a replacement for a virusscanner, just a last minute option if all the others fail. You can download it here ==> Stinger | McAfee Free Tools

Good luck!

A lot of people can't get Windows Defender turned back on even after uninstalling third party AV with the specific uninstall tool provided by the company, leaving them defenseless. I don't need to say anything further than that.

I have the paid versions of-

Norton
Avast
WinPatrol
AdAware

Free version of Spybot Search & Destroy.

Between them, my computer is free of malware, viruses, trojans, adware, etc.

It feels good to have a smooth running computer.

It cost me a little bit, but the paid versions offer much better protection, IN MY OPINION.

Others may have different opinions.

IMO for home use you don't need anything more than built-in Windows Defender/firewall. But, if that doesn't give you peace-of-mind, then my second suggestion would be the free Avast! antivirus.

It's also a good idea to install scanners, such as Malwarebytes and Superantispyware.

I always find it ironic that people don't trust Defender. Let's put it like this. Other paid virus protection suites are made by people who depend on computers being penetrable to viruses, they would rather people be scared witless and buy their products- they need all the horrible things out there to continue. Defender is made by Microsoft who would like nothing better than to give you ironclad protection and an invincible fortress so they can make money on their OS and software being an impenetrable wall. Both parties want to make money, the difference is Microsoft solely cares about eliminating the security threats because they impede their image, and the anti-virus companies care about delivering a product that works, but on the other, need the status quo to continue for many years.

I know which group I don't trust and it isn't Microsoft's Defender.

Also not to mention that third party AV companies have to hack and reverse engineer their software to work a little bit right on Windows 8, since Microsoft is the only one that has access to the new kernel.

I've just switched my main desktop to Avast! Free. So far it has given me no problems and slowdowns, etc. and works very well. Don't know why but I feel more secure with a more robust antivirus even though Defender/MSE hasn't given me a problem (I've been using them for a long time).

I think I will stay with avast! for now on my desktop, because it has more hardware. But for my older PCs, and family PCs, I will still use MSE.

Full scan of WD takes a long time. You should only do a full scan once a month and a quick scan once a week. You should add Malwarebytes pro in the mix or if you do not want to purchase it you can install the free version and annually run it every few days. The pro should be set to run every day not near the time WD runs
