Well I have gone to SERVICES and made sure Windows Defender is on Automatic. I also went to Security Center and made sure that starts Automatic. I did a Search on APPS and found Windows Defender and Start as Administrator. It still won't start. I used Norton Removal Tool all before this and rebooted but still I cannot get Defender to start! Bleep Bleep!!!! :sleepy:

Anyone have any more they can add to this problem in the way of a resolution?

HP Pavillion 23
Windows 8 Home Edition

Thanks so much! jack

Well it's hard for me to believe that I'd solved this once already. Did a REFRESH, something new in 8 and lost it and forgot how. The step I was missing was going to Control Panel and turning it on there.

SO TO CONCLUDE:
Go to SERVICES: make sure Windows Defender and Security Center are on AUTOMATIC
Got to CONTROL PANEL: make sure Windows Defender is turned on there.

Simple right? No ... not for me in this OS. I've been with pc's since the days of running programs from the C:// prompt. I hate this Win 8 worst of all.

I too still have the same issue and have been working on a resolution for the past several hours. I am in the same situation as jackdashack. I want to be able to start Windows Defender, I want to be able to find Windows Defender in Services. The error code I get is '0x80070424', Iv typed this code that many times its become part of my memory hardcore (HC). I need a fix on this asap :)

Also, I used the SecurityCheck.exe file to have my report below for us all to see, maybe it will help someone somewhere out there find/give me a possible resolution to use Windows Defender.

I open Action Centre showing me two errors on Spyware and Antivirus, basically its Windows Defender right, but Windows Defender wont start and plus it isn't even running, I cant find the damn thing lol. If this was a desktop I would have formatted it all and restarted everything from scratch but its my new and first laptop. -I can continue on with everything and restart using Norton Endpoint Protection but it defeats the purpose of freedom in being able to choose with my free will what I decide to use at whatever time I want what best protected me. I didn't know uninstalling NEP was going to leave Windows Defender DISABLED PERMENANTLY - DID/DOES ANYONE ELSE?

Jack says:
I recently came up against this again when I did a full factory restore. I got it resolved again but I think pretty much as I mentioned in my last post above, or the next to the last post. Sorry, I can't recall the exact but it was going to Services and turning it on, and going to Control Panel and selecting Windows Defender and turning it on. I usually Google and eventually find an answer there, trial and error, if it is not forthcoming here. Click below. Good Luck!

The real resolution to this is that Windows Defender WILL NOT turn on if there is any trace of another anti-virus program. It searches for other virus programs and switches to OFF and cannot be until all remnants of others are gone. Get rid of them and it will work. ":-Dx
