Anyone know of any free virus protection software, something with real time protection would be good. Any advice would be really nice :)

Windows Defender. It's like MSE, but preinstalled and baked in. And free. :)

As mentioned above, Windows Defender is a good/easy choice if you want free. You might do a little better with some other free program, but why bother? Excellent protection requires expenditure.

May want to have a look here: System Security - Windows 8 Forums

I personally would stick with Windows Defender (enhanced version of MSE hardcoded into OS), as the only people who know the OS in and out right now are Microsoft and I do believe they are going to keep it that way.

Why did you choose Avast over Windows Defender?

I'm still looking to gain understanding why people are using AVG or Avast, etc, instead of Windows Defender, which comes with Windows. Just wondering what the advantage is.

AVG? Ugh. Not even a fan of Avast anymore. It's either Avira or MSE/Defender (8) for me. Defender seems to be working well, so sticking with that for now.

There really isn't any, since third parties don't have access to the new kernel source code. The only one that does is Microsoft.

Windows Firewall.

One thing I do miss is the easy program control of ZoneAlarm where you just could tick/untick a program. I liked the way ZA asked you if a new program could access the Internet.

Windows Firewall seems very complicated to me.

I haven't really looked at Win8 firewall. I assume it is much like that of Win7--which, yes, if you are concerned about outgoing, then Windows firewall is not manageable by most users. But, really one is pretty darn safe to just protect against incoming with a firewall--which is totally easy with Windows firewall. Windows firewall has always done a great job on incoming. Just use common sense on outgoing.

Yes, Windows Defender is sufficient for the basic security but I am using third party program for the peace of mind, I wander around carelessly so have to be more cautious :p

Or you can try kingsoft antivirus 2012 program. New antivirus program and totally free. Works in windows 8 but disables WD. I have been testing it for a month and I really like it.
