The above test was on Windows 7. Interested to see a test on Win 8.

This is actually a personal preference similar to browser choice, I've used Avira, Avast , MSE and AVG in the past, I have tested Avast and AVG in Windows 8, Avast hangs for some reason when updating, AVG works fine, Avira used to give me false positives in Vista but I haven't used it in my Windows 8. Almost all of them are O.K.

Others you mention that I have used are packed with advertising and pestering you to upgrade to the paid version, this is not the case with Comodo!

I just was using Comodo, but it caused a few problems, such as not being able to access the control panel.. I think I'll wait a while before going back.

No problems at all with Comodo on my system, are you using the latest version V6?

I don't remember, I may have downloaded from Cnet so probably not if that was the case... Maybe I will give it another go.

I test and implement AV software at a large Fortune 10 company in the US. We use Symantec Endpoint Protection v12 at work but I use Microsoft Security Essentials at home on Win7, Vista and XP and use the built-in Windows Defender on Win8. I'm satisfied with those, they're not perfect but they work well and don't slow the PC down. Zero Day and some malware can always get through, so I recommend application whitelisting in addition to AV, but it's not very practical for computer hobbyists.

Avast caused me random BSODs, and AVG caused my live tiles to always bug. :S

Help, please! I can't afford a virus program and I badly need a recommendation for a FREE program that will do the job, (without all the bells and whistles). I tried AVG and it was one of those "free for 30 days' nightmares with many add ons and problems. Help appreciated. Using Win 8.1.
