    Hello njnitehawk,

That's really a matter of personal choice, but I like using the included Windows Defender (rebranded MSE).

Nobody knows the ins and outs of Windows like Microsoft does. WD (MSE) is simply awesome!

I did give MSE a run in Win 7 - it seemed solid enough to be fair but with programs like these its the results you do not see are the proof. Its normally only when something goes wrong do you question the doctor.

Couldn't get Windows Defender to run on a friends Windows 8 computer either advise on internet was to use services.msc command (windows key R to bring up run window) and set it to Auto startup and reboot but it still didn't work. Then I noticed that windows 'flag' system messages had notices about Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware and was able to turn it on that way. Hope this helps - I'm going to reboot now after an update to make sure it keeps running!

    Confirmed mmordha's fix

mmordha has the key to this particular irritant from Windows 8. I had the exact same symptoms, but opening the "Action Center" and clicking on the *second* 'enable Windows Defender' link did the trick. The first enable link (beside the virus protection notification, I think) did squat, but the second link (spyware protection notification) did the trick. I suspect this is an issue with systems that came pre-installed with some commercial anti-virus crapware (mine was Norton). They oh-so-helpfully disable Windows Defender for you so it won't conflict with their nagware product...but really Windows? No 'enable' button on the dialog box telling you Defender is turned off? Just another classic example why this OS isn't ready for prime time yet, IMO. Bah.

I test AV at a large Fortune 10 company and we use Symantec Endpoint Protection at work and almost all of us use Microsoft Security Essentials on Win7 and the built-in Windows Defender on Windows 8. I also use MalWareBytes at home. I cannot recommend any other products based upon our testing, that's really all I can say...Hope this helps...
