I'd say the inbox Windows Defender (previously known as Microsoft Security Essentials) and SmartScreen filter should be sufficient for just about anyone, unless you have very specific needs that these two don't already cover.

Hard to say - the best anything is subjective in both of those fields. However, only Internet Explorer and Google Chrome install "modern" versions of their browsers, so right now, those are the only two real options for browsers on Windows 8 (unless you only want desktop browsers - then you have all options available).

The best defense is your habits; if you download everything free from CNET you are at risk, I never download anything free from the WEB aside of in a VM or sandbox for test. I sometime have a fake anti-virus that pop up mainly when I search for picture on Google photo, pictures of trains mainly, I'm a train modeler and many web sites hosted for free, maintain by other modelers like me, are contaminated with fake anti-virus, in all the cases, Defender of Security Essential have warm me and take care of it.

Avoid free stuff, especially from a email link, that's my best recommendation.

As far as i know, Norton hogs up your computer resources.

Paid for antiwalware software is redundant. I didn't even buy an OEM version of Norton I could have for $15. No point. Common sense + vetting programs you really need + caution is all you need.

    Nice!

    I like the part.
Just like dodging bullets with closed eyes, you didn't mentioned Firefox (probably no "modern" app yet).
On the other hand, IE10 and Chrome are first at Metro app browsers.

By bullets, I refer to Firefox-crashes that happen frequently on modern CPU's.
You probably encountered this too... Hope it gets fixed.

    Back to topic:
Win Defender/Sec Essentials is pretty good (I'm one of the users). For more defense, I'm not that sure but Norton 360 seems very complete + it has a app or two installed. Norton will use more CPU power but it's included in the price you have to pay for more protection.

It depends what sites you visit so you'll never be 100% protected in my opinion.

I try their Symantec End Point Protection on a Server because it was dam cheap, you should see how the Server was crawling after, and on a SBS 2011 server it even have a huge bug, you have to shut down the service once a week and delete their 40 gb + db files

I am not using another AV with Win8. But if I do, it will be Kaspersky. Check it out.

They offer a 30 day free trial without having to give credit card info like Norton.
