Why did Micrososoft not put in the Scheduling feature in WD?

I do not get it. When it was Windows Defender back when it first came out for XP there was a schedular. So how come Microsoft took it out of WD in Windows 8?
How is the average user going to know when to run a scan?
Is there an easier way to set up a scan for it without having to go into the Task Schedular to set it up?

There was a rumor that I heard that in the final Micrososft would put in the schedular inside the program, so what happened?
I installed the Windows 8 Pro over Windows 7 Ultimate today and when bringing up WD no schedular at all

Good question... I've been wondering about the same thing. All the "Help" info implies that you can schedule scans--but you CAN"T!

OK....I found task scheduler and I see that the virus scan is scheduled for 3:21 AM. For crying outloud....my desktop is not even powered up at that hour. I sure as heck don't leave it on all the time. I checked every tab and I could find no way to change that time.

Please tell me why each new edition of Windows seems like the developers stay awake nights trying to figure out devious ways to make it more and more difficult to use. It was so simple in Win 7 to set a time for the scan to occur and I had mine set for 8:00 PM every day because I knew the PC would most likely be turned on at that time.

So what now? It's too darn complicated for this guy.

Well, you're way ahead of me... I can't even find "Task Scheduler." It's not in my list of apps. Any clues?

Update: OK, finally found it. Way harder than it needs to be.

All you have to do is use that task as a template for creating your own, and then delete the existing task. You'll also note it's set to run as soon as possible after a missed task sequence, so if your machine is off at that time, it will run as soon as it is able after you next power up (within 10 minutes, I believe is the target window). So even if your machine is off, it should scan once you get back online.

OK. Thanks Cluberti. If it is dependable that it will do a scan at least on each day that it is turned on.....I'm satisfied. Setting up a new time is just too complicated in my opinion. I agree with rchris...."Way harder than it needs to be". But this is the reputation Microsoft has to live up to......if something was easy before.....let's make it difficult just to prove we can.

Well, you have to remember that the UI for Defender (aka Security Essentials) is a desktop app, and that could be an issue on Windows RT devices. Making sure this is baked into the OS in a more permanent manner (task scheduler) versus a control panel or taskbar applet (aka Defender UI) makes some sense. I believe this is the same time setting that the original Security Essentials used, although I don't have a Win7 install with it running to see for sure. It does run daily now if it can, which it did not do as Security Essentials (I believe the default was to run weekly for SE).
