In Windows 7 you can set Windows Update to download automatically but wait for manual installation - but have Security Essentials update and install virus definitions automatically in real time which I prefer. As far as I can tell in Windows 8 the only way to have Windows Defender update in real time is to have all Windows updates download and install automatically.
Is this everyone's experience ?
Does anybody know of a way to download all updates automatically but have only the virus definitions install automatically?
Any tips appreciative
Kevin

It's driving me nuts. I wish defender/mse would automatically update itself, like in Windows 7. Every day I get the prompt in the lower right (login screen) that I have windows updates available. I've been burned way too many times during a hurried shutdown or reboot to find out that I have 20 critical updates installing during the shutdown procedure (come back 20 minutes later). I want to install them on my schedule, but couldn't care less if defender installed its updates in the background.

Mine updates automatically. I accepted the default vaules when installing Win8 and I've never changed them.

The default value that you mention would be to let windows download and install all windows updates whenever it felt like it, forcing long restarts at inconvenient times, etc. This would include virus definitions for defender. I just want the virus definitions updated automatically, not everything else.

That's how it was in Windows 7. You could have windows updates stay in "manual" mode and let MSE update whenever it wanted to (probably was possible since MSE was an addon to windows 7).

I've never had a problem with downloading and applying the Microsoft updates. The critical updates are installed at 3am, I believe and I never even notice the other updates (Windows Defender updates).

To run Defender update each day separately from Win Update, just set up a Task Schedule to run

"C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MpCmdRun.exe" -SignatureUpdate -MMPC

That is what I do as I only run Win Update when there are updates, not automatically downloaded and installed.

Is this doing the same thing as the script here

They are launching different programs - do they end up doing the same but just from a different start point?

Awesome. I never considered adding it as a scheduled task. I just set it up (I didn't have to use the MMPC argument though) and hope it works as well as it looks like it will.

Thanks!
