Sound echoes on new Windows 8.1

I just got a new Inspiron with Windows 8.1 loaded on it, and I noticed that the sound seemed to "echo" on many different applications. The echo time was very short and gave the sound an annoying "boomy" feeling.

I ran the audio tests found at "Personalization->Sounds->Playback->Speakers/Headphones->Configure" and heard the same problem there. These tests also revealed that sounds weren't isolated to the headphone or speaker they were supposed to be: Audio that should have played through only the left or right headphone echoed very clearly in both.

(After some experimenting I found that the echo time was around 20ms.)

Does anyone know why this might be happening, or know of a way to fix it? Much appreciated.

Sounds like echo or reverb is enabled by "Audio Effect Enhancements". If you have Realtek sound, the Realtek HD Audio Manager has a Sound Effects section and that is where its at in Realtek. Not sure about other sound hardware. Some PC's come with a software enhancement to the sound hardware, such as Creative SoundBlaster MB and that may have the Effects option.

If you can't find it, the Dell Community support forum is the place to go to get it resolved.
There are separate sections for Laptops and Desktops so post in the applicable hardware section.
