Debug S/PDIF recording device stuck at max input levels

I leave the house, all is well. I come back and I can't use my default mic, and the Digital Audio is maxing out.

I didn't change anything on the pc. How do I debug this beyond the basic Recording Devices properties fiddling, rebooting, disabling, driver checks?

The desired mic is a standalone mic clipped to my headset cord and plugged into the red jack on the motherboard back panel. It's the default device. The Digital Audio I've never used.

    • What can make the Digital Audio max out on it's own when I'm away?
    • The Default mic recognizes when it's plugged in or not.
    • I don't know what the second "Not plugged in" mic is referring to.

First thing I notice, you do not have the correct sound driver. Only the generic, basic function Windows installed "High Definition Audio Device" driver. Install the correct driver for your sound (e.g. Realtek, Conexant or whatever you have).

Second you are showing the Recording panel, not the Playback panel.

Normally, with most sound drivers, Stereo Mix is available and set as the Default Recording Device. Then whatever mic or line in that is used will be heard (and used by programs). Stereo Mix is needed to record audio from the Internet, too.
