Sounds - another casualty in windows 8?

Not everyone likes Windows AppEvent sounds, and in the past it has been possible to toggle sounds on or off or remove a sound from any event using the sounds control panel applet. Windows 8 rp does not give much of a choice.

Windows 8 continues its deconstruction of what we knew and expected of windows in the sounds department - for instance disabling the showing of sound options for windows logon and logoff with the registry key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\EventLabels\WindowsLogon\ExcludeFromCPL = 1 etc.

(i.e. you will not be logging off from your desktop anymore, so we won't remind you that it used to be available.)

Sound schemes seem harder to get to work than in Windows 7 does anyone have any tips? I have followed some of the sound tutorials on sevenforums without any joy yet

I have the sounds control panel and able to switch on and off, I have checked the registry as well but not sure whether this is what you are looking for.

In 8 there is less to choose from here too. Across the board, Windows 8 for PCs is becoming a cut-down version of Windows 7 - just like ME was a cut-down version of Windows 98SE - I just hope that this means that something really superior is coming next.

When I click Browse, I could see the sound files in a different window and can be added, but as you said this seems to be cut-down version and hopefully priced accordingly.

Let's just look at this though shall we.... your beloved XP didn't include DVD playback either. It was introduced in Windows Vista, an OS which you no doubt hated. It wasn't free, you paid for it in the cost of the OS as there was a license fee Microsoft had to pay.

Giving people back the choice of which DVD playback app they want to use, and lowering the cost of the OS as a byproduct is a good thing. (assuming of course it does result in a price reduction for the OS. If it doesn't, then BOOO to Microsoft )
    Hi there
"WOTIZIT" with people complaining about no DVD playback

VLC works fine and is FREE. The DVD issue has been posted AD NAUSEAM and AFAIK even windows 7 WMC / WMP won't play commercial DVD's either (correct me if I'm wrong on this one). We used to have to PAY for applications like WinDVD or PowerDVD and these would also only play the region your DVD player was set up for.

Reduction in price of OS seems valid too -- I believe W8 upgrade is about 45 USD - in EUR probably about 55 EUR -- note prices in Europe INCLUDE VAT - US prices to Europeans often seem cheaper than they really are as they are shown BEFORE state / Federal taxes added so often the difference isn't as large as first looks (unless you live somewhere like Texas which as low taxes).

Windows 8 will mount Virtual ISO's too -- so if you can create an ISO of the DVD with software say like AnyDVD to make an ISO you can mount the virtual Iso and play with VLC player - you don't even need the physical dvd at all.

When I'm on the Eurostar train service between London ==> Brussels / Paris I copy a load of DVD Iso's to a 32 GB micro sdhc card and using a micro ==> standard sd card adapter plug that in to the built in reader on a small netbook and use VLC to play DVD isos I've copied to the SDHC card. No problem at all. Never use physical DVD's any more now either apart from the original Rip / copy which I do on an old desktop which has a DVD device.

Sounds -- seems all the "usual" options are there -- but hopefully you don't use these in a busy office -- nothing more annoying with all these bongs etc every few seconds -- same with mobile phones -- users of these don't need to set their ringtones to Megaloud in a busy office -- but always seem to. --Oh for a decent phone "Jamming" device. !!!!!

Just click the play windows sounds start up box if you want to (control panel==>sounds) -- but why would you on Earth need Windows start up sound - W8 boots in a few secs anyway --especially from an SSD.

I think as it's coming up to Harvest time - the TROLLS are beginning to emerge from the woodwork.

    Cheers

I've not seen such great prices in "the States" on win8 upgrades but, they've pretty well made sure that windows 7 goes at a premium. I think all this abandonment of things we're used to with windows .. sound scheme choices, interface mods and even (controversial) the nasty win 8.1 start button .. is to get us into a state where we'll welcome windows 9 .. you can bet they will have all sorts of bells and whistles (and sparkly things too) to get us to jump ship and all head for the new mono-system win9 for all your windows devices.
While a bunch of us don't mind ripping a few things out under the hood of the os, most folks just suffer along and will see the bright & shiny Windows 9 coming over the horizon and hail the new, modern OS for the masses. *shivers*

Win8 is all but being abandoned as it is anyway, this second upcoming update will be pretty minor with no further Upgrades planed.
    But......
Abandoning those flashy thingies like Aero, sounds, games and pretty pictures I welcome. Those are just distractions not really needed for working of windows, just plain clutter. If somebody wants that stuff there are hundreds or even thousands different themes out there. Nice clean OS without such bells and whistles is all I need. Even best computers (HW wise) is hampered by at least some amount with that eye candy.

Not sure what you are referring to as clutter. I don't want thousands of 3rd party apps, but I really hate the default system sounds for Win8 and they certainly have not made it easy to get Windows 7 sounds back. Even if you wanted to go to the trouble of browsing and selecting each sound file. The names of the system sounds between Win7 and Win8 are different.

I am really surprised someone has not packaged a Windows 7 sound scheme for Windows 8. I would even take Vista sounds.

Can't you just copy .wav files from 7 or Vista to /windows/media folder, assign sounds to events and save as a theme ?
