Hi, lately I've had a few problems like Skype constantly logging me off and my computer not detecting my internet but after I finally fixed those problems, my speakers stopped working. I'm not very good with computers so I looked around through the internet and tried a bunch of things like disabling/enabling the headphones, uninstalling them entirely, using different headphone jacks, and restarting my computer. though I noticed I didn't have some of the things people were talking about. for example, I don't have the realtek audio drive thing, even though i'm pretty sure I used to have itGyazo - 9999964142c8d3ec55c8fb039a940e43.png. in another post I saw about someone with a similar problem he had about 6 devices shown here-Gyazo - c738b764fe632678c3490604e187f4d1.png- and that was a good thing apparently. I have horrible with computers all the time so there might just be a really simple fix that I never noticed.

Welcome to the forum.

From the first link I see you only have "High Definition Audio" which suggests you only have the generic, basic function Windows installed sound driver. If you are supposed to have Realtek it will need to be reinstalled. You should be able to get the driver from HP downloads for your specific model or you can download the driver direct from Realtek.
The Realtek High Definition Codecs can be downloaded here: Realtek

FYI, here is how to post screen shots on this forum. http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/2598-screenshots-files-upload-post-eight-forums.html

Thanks for welcoming me.

I would've replied earlier but kind of forgot my password.

So, I tried downloading realtek from both of those places, but it didn't work and I think i might not need it altogether. while I was playing around through settings, trying to find something that might work I found this(it's a gif so I guess I cant place it as an image). I tried putting on some music while looking the devices and i'm pretty sure it was showing that the headphones were receiving the music(though i'm not sure because as I said, I'm not good with computers). after that I switched it to "digital/audio(S/PDIF) to see if maybe something would change, but the same things happened. so far I have tried 2 different headphones and my speakers. none of them work.

i'm not sure whether this matters or not, but I have had a similar problem to this a while back, when I first got this computer. when I first got this computer about a year ago, I was checking to see if both my speakers and my headphones would work. I put my speakers in one of the headphone-jacks at the back (green) and it worked fine. after that, I tried plugging in my headphones to the front headphone jack, but they didn't work. the only way my old headphones would connect to the computer was if I unplugged my speakers and replaced the green jack with my headphones. later on this wasn't a problem since I only ever used headphones, and when I switched from my old headphones to my current ones nothing went wrong.

EDIT: my friend gave me this link Windows 8 Sound Problems | Troubleshooting Audio Guide. I tried almost all of the "fix's" and nothing has worked so far.

If you use the "Snipping Tool" to grab screen shots, you won't get gif files, you can save them as jpg's (for example). Please adhere to the forum procedure to post screen shots.

Digital will not work.

Does the rear GREEN speaker jack work? with the playback device set to "Speakers". Although you don't have the Realtek drivers installed (if that is what sound hardware you have) it should still work with the basic function High Definition Audio Driver. The correct drivers for the sound hardware will give you full feature sound drivers. Depending on what you do with audio, the "Stereo Mix" is needed as the default recording device and the basic function High Definition Audio drivers do not provide this.
Please post the actual HP model number so I can confirm what you need.

Now to the new headphone, have you verified that they work?

The green speaker jack does not work. I have tried it with 2 different headphones and my speakers. no change. I have verified that my headphones work with my ipod and a Nintendo 3DS. My computer is an HP pavilion 500 PC series.

Exactly what Model 500 do you have? One I found is from 2002.

Well, I just checked the receipt for the computer and I still have warranty and at this point i'm pretty sure it's not some setting I can change. i'm just going to replace this computer.
thanks for the help, I will definitely recommend this website/forum to other's if they need help.

Sorry I didn't fix it for you. But, if its still under warranty let HP take care of the problem.
