The Audio Service is not running and can't restore

Yesterday I turned on my computer and I was greeted without any sound. I think my computer updated when I went to bed the day before, so I thought that might've been the cause (or maybe it was AVG). So I looked up how to fix it and saw System Restore, tried that and was greeted with this:

"System Restore failed to extract the file (C:/Windows/WinSxS/Manifests/AM37C0~1.MAN) from the restore point. The restore point was damaged or deleted during the restore."

I don't know what to do now because when I tried to do the advanced recovery thing in PC Settings it won't load, and I can't make an ISO so I can do a refresh install. I'm very distressed, what do I do?

Maybe your problem is bigger than just the audio and maybe you should post your issue in another area of the forum. Good luck.

That's what I thought, but someone moved the thread here.

Sadly most posts by users that have this problem wound having to do a Windows reinstall. There are many different fixes or suggestions on fixing it on the web but I've seen posts from users trying the various "fixes" and none worked. This is not to say that there is NO fix for the problem, just that most of the posts I've seen resulted in a reinstall to fix it.

You could try, one at a time, removing the Updates to see if that fixes it. Go to the panel for Updates (easiest way is go to desktop and start Internet Explorer. In the Tools dropdown is the Windows Update. One option is to "View Update History" which lists installed updates and the date the update was installed. You can then go to Remove Programs and remove them, one at a time. It may be a time consuming process as you need to restart the PC after each update uninstall.

I tried to go to View Update History but it ended up freezing, and when I tried to go to remove the updates it didn't load. I guess I'll have to do the reinstall, then?

Sounds like more problems than just the audio service. It may take a reinstall.

Would it be better for me to fully clean the drive or just remove my files?

The best option when reinstalling is to do a complete "clean" install, which involved reformatting the hard drive. Thus, save all your user data, pictures, music, etc to some other media before doing the clean install as all will be lost.
