Solved Microphone Doesn't Work When Headphones are in Audio Jack

Well, I used my microphone on my laptop once to call a friend on Skype. Everything worked fine, even with my headphones plugged into the audio jack. But the day after, I try and do the same but my microphone isn't even working. After lots of frustration and trial and error, I find that it's the headphones being plugged into the audio jack that's causing this. Does anyone know how to fix this? Something simple, right? I use my headphones when I'm calling anyone. I don't want anyone to hear and I hate headsets with a burning passion. They make my head hurt, so is there any way to fix this? Thanks :)

Try refreshing the audio. Go to the device manager, RIGHT click on the entry for the RealTek HD audio, then LEFT click "Uninstall". DO NOT uninstall the drivers. Restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the audio. This fixes any Windows/Audio corruption and many other problems. If you are lucky it will take care of your problem.

The Device Manager can be accessed by going to the Desktop. Hold the Windows Key down and then press the Pause/Break key. When the panel comes up, the Device Manager can be accessed from the Task List in the upper left of the panel.

Here is mine from Windows 7 but my Windows 8.1 is the same.

Thanks! I tried that, and it asked for a restart. I did that. Needed to re install, and such. Still the same problem :(

You should have an entry for the Microphone in the Device Manager, Sound section. Do the uninstall/reboot/reinstall with that and see if that helps.

If not, do you have a System Restore point that is BEFORE the problem happened? (when it worked correctly).

I tried looking for that, uninstalled but I have no idea where to go from there, as I can't find where to re install it.

Uh. I have no idea what that is. Also, to note: I'm now getting severe issues with audio. I can't use Windows Media Player. It keeps crashing, never works in the first place and causes my laptop to glitch and spazz. I also have issues when trying to read MOV files. The computer hasn't liked it, so I can't click it without my screen glitching and going to the view in the Windows 8 not desktop main screen. Can't edit it, can't remove it. The laptop just hates it and it keeps glitching out and causing mayhem. What on earth is going on here? Do I have another faulty laptop? :(

This suggests more problems with the PC than just the audio, and the audio problems may just be a byproduct of what is causing the other problems.

I would more suspect a Windows OS problem than a hardware problem with the PC. It may take a "factory reset" (reinstall) to correct everything.

One other comment, and I don't think it has anything directly to do with your problems but I see you have the 64 bit OS but only 4GB of RAM. The main benefit of a 64 bit OS is that it can address more than 4GB of RAM. A 32 bit can only address a little less than the 4GB. However, a 64 bit OS uses more of the basic memory than a 32 bit, thus you have less memory available for programs. Also, how old is this PC and did it originally come with Win 8?, I don't recall many new PC's with a Celeron CPU.

I thought so. Oh, whew! So, it's more likely an install problem? How come that happened, then? Is it quite common? How would I get to this Factory Reset? Will I have to move everything I need to my USB stick, or doesn't Factory Reset delete everything?

Oh, would that be a problem? The OS and RAM thing? My laptop is only just under a month's old. Yes, it did originally come with Windows 8. Is that bad, having a Celeron CPU?

You should have a procedure to restore the PC to the original settings when you first got it. If you don't have the instructions, Toshiba most likely has that on their web site. A "Factory reinstall" will delete any user data so back that up on some removable media first so you can recover it.

A Celeron is at the low end of the Intel CPU line. I didn't even know Celeron's were still being sold. Celeron processors, of some sort, have been sold since the Windows XP days on entry level (low price) PC's.

Okay, thank you! What if this doesn't do a thing? How certain are you that this will fix it? Oh, right. So, I have a bad CPU, you're saying?

No, I'm not saying the CPU is defective. Just that its not a high powered CPU like the Intel i3, i5 or i7's.

No guarantee the reinstall will fix it. But if you call the PC vendor for support most likely the first thing they will want you to do is the reinstall. If the reinstall doesn't fix it, the next step is the vendor support. Only the PC vendor's support can get whatever is wrong corrected under warranty, since this is a new PC.

Ah, okay. Thanks. I get it.

Okay, I'll try it. I'll mark this as Solved and if still no luck, I will ring them. Thanks for all your help! :)
