    No sound VIA VT1818S

Hi all, I had Windows 8 x64 installed and working fine until my SDD decided to die

I've re-installed Win8 today and I can't get the sound working. I can't remember if I had to install a driver last time.

In device manager there was just 4 drivers called "High Definition Audio Device" and in the playback properties it only had digital output, there wasn't any speakers.

I've tried installing Windows 7 drivers and I then get a "VIA HD Audio Device" in device manager and speakers in the playback properties but the sound is really bad with lots of noise.

    Any help?

    I've found this:

"As far as I know that whoever having the a VIA VT1818 or any other VIA HDA chipset, they have to make sure that these things wont work properly with Windows 8 HDA driver. The cause is due to the broken enumerator which will not let you to find the output devices. Digitally it works fine but not with the output speakers. You have to download the Windows 7 drivers and install them manually. When you do the manual installation of Windows 7 driver, the output devices being detected but as the "robot sound". Now go to the Device manager> VIA HD Audio Deck and manually roll back to the Microsoft supplied driver. Like this way sound settings will be restored."

I've tried this but when you roll back the driver you loose the speaker output again.

I gave up and re-installed Windows 7, but I noticed that I had the exact same problem until I installed the audio driver, so I'll keep my fingers crossed that VIA make a Windows 8 driver for the VT1818s. It's still strange that I got it to work the first time I installed Windows 8

As a pre-caution I am testing Win8 on my Dell D620 Notebook, so I carry two hard drives. XP is my stanby, and I loaded Win8, which saved programs from Win7. Its takes 10 minutes or less, to unscrew hard drive and insert another and reboot, this avoid having to re-install all, having said that, on yesterday I plugged in my speakers and no sound, nothing from Win8 to indicate a malfunction, not even the usual notification of not recorgnizeing a device, nothing happen when plugged in.

I was in need of immediate music for visiting friends, I didn't trouble-shoot problem, removed Win8 hard drive, re- placed with WinXP hard drive, music played with exceptional clarity. I am running the SIGMA Tel HD Audio driver, the Plug and Pay Device Enumerator is working, according to the Device Manager.

QUESTION: Is there a flaw in Win8, that it will need Vendors OEM Support in adding new drivers for its programs,

    Windows 10 Education 64 Bit

VIA seem to be really dragging their ass making working Windows 8 drivers. I had to use compatibility mode with Windows 7 drivers.
