Realtek audio not working after win 8.1 pro

i've recently installed win 8.1 pro N x64 and this has stopped my onboard sound card from working. my mobo is the MSI big bang xpower ii, it was working fine under win 7 home edition x64 but now refuses to do anything. when i try to test the playback device the green bar moves sporadically up and down but there is no sound at all. i have tried installing the latest drivers for everything, i even tried unistalling the device and letting windows re-detect it, which it did and then after it installed it all back to the same problem. its getting really frustrating now so i really hope its just me being stupid and someone can help!

Some sound drivers need to be updated to Win 8.1 specific drivers. The Win 7 drivers work OK with Win 8, but not Win 8.1. I even had that problem with one of my recording studio interfaces and Roland had to issue a special Win 8.1 driver for it to work.

According to what I see on the MSI site, this has RealTek integrated audio. If this is the case, RealTek has an 8.1 driver.
Download the High Definition Audio Codecs, 64 bit version. Realtek

You may or may not have to reinstall the SoundBlaster MB software enhancement software after the driver update.

hi fireberd, thats the latest driver i've tried and still nothing. it won't even test correctly last time i tried to test it it crashed the playback devices window :( i've even tried to use the more recent driver from the microsoft update catalogue and it refuses to install stating that the driver is upto date

The latest drivers on the RealTek sit for my audio chip are R2.75 (v6.0.1.7246), but using station-drivers, I found a full install package that was newer (v6.0.1.7499) -- and installed them. I did this because (1) the drivers from RealTek don't include the Audio software, and (2) my motherboard is so old that the latest version of the software (from Gigabyte) is several years old.

And ... I was surprised that the install actually worked OK. I normally don't use "third-party" drivers, but in this case, I'm glad that I did.

I wonder if the SoundBlaster MB software is causing any problems?

And, if you uninstall the RealTek, in the Device Manager, and also delete the drivers, when you restart Windows will either install RealTek or the generic High Definition Driver. See if that one works. If you still have problems, uninstall the SoundBlaster software, restart the PC and then check.

I have the R2.75 drivers installed on both of my Desktops with dual boot Win 7 and Win 8.1. Both have the RealTek HD Audio Manager. One system is an ASRock Z77 Professional Fatal1ty motherboard and the other is an ASUS P8-Z77-LE Plus motherboard. The ASUS system even has the Pre-release BETA Windows 10 and the RealTek drivers and Audio Manager are on that system.

i haven't got the soundblaster software installed as it made no difference when it was installed so i haven't re-installed it as there would be no point until the soundcard is working. this is very baffling, i feel like ive tried everything and nothing works :(

Reinstall the Intel Motherboard chipset drivers, even if the driver install says its already installed. One of the things the chipset drivers do is properly identify all the devices on the motherboard. Intel may have an 8.1 updated chipset driver. Intel: Tablet, 2in1, Laptop, Desktop, Smartphone, Server, Embedded
And, did you try uninstalling and let Windows install the generic High Definition Audio drivers?

i did do and it didn't change, still no sound. but there has been a development in the fact that if i try testing it, it doesn't even make the green bar move now it just hangs till i tell it to stop testing. i'll try the intel chipset drivers to see if they do anything but im sure i've updated them

Could try Driver Sweeper as a last resort, it has an option for Realtek driver cleaning: Guru3D - Driver Sweeper

Actually it is DDU now and doesn't have Realtek cleaning anymore. :( I used it in the past and fixed a problem for me. Oh well.

A lot of times BIOS updates are for new CPUs. Is there a changelog that says what the newer one does?

for the 2.8 update this is all it has

- Improved Memory compatibility.
- Update microcode

but for the 2.6 version i have noticed there is something about improved audio problem when using IVY-bridge cpu,

- Add more DMI information.
- Improved audio problem when using IVY-Bridge CPU.

i have the intel I7 4930K processor, but not sure if its IVY-bridge or not
