I've used audacity before.. perhaps i missed this part of it but I thought audacity doesn't let you record sound inside your computer, (lets say from an application or movie you are playing)..

i thought audacity only allows you to edit audio.. and "record" only using the microphone..

however if i am wrong i will definitely use audacity..

the program i referred to earlier actually grabs audio from whatever program you were using or any sound that is produced inside your computer applications.. not just externally through a microphone..

but maybe audacity changed since i last used it.??

So, if you are saying audacity will grab audio from for example VLC while playing a movie so i can record that cool new song in whatever movie then audacity is the answer..

    yes?

Actually you can. You have to change the settings in Audacity to record from the "stereomix" on your PC. Sometimes it's set to the microphone or something else.

Tutorial - Recording Computer Playback on Windows - Audacity Manual

Here's the info from the audacity wiki.

you could take a check with the built-in application called sound recorder:

    Record audio with Sound Recorder

    Or the recorder APP:

Sound Recorder app for Windows: FAQ - Windows Help

Or you may take some 3rd-party software.

If you have an extra $1k laying around, CoolEdit Pro is the way to go for real studio quality audio record/edit ability. I haven't used on Win8.1, but I still use it on a legacy WinXP desktop. Has 256 track editing, unlimited filtering and audio enhancement capabilities. But be warned, it's only as good as your audio card's quality. With the right codecs, and cd/dvd burning program, you can create any audio filetype and quality level needed for any use, best investment in audio software I've ever made.....

Program I linked to is doing just that, anything coming thru speakers is recorded.
