I dunno, I've always used cards. I guess I could pull the Audigy out and try the integrated one....

You have "Realtek ALC892 codec" chip, same as mine, beats old SBs any day.

OK. So that's better for sure using the Realtek but now that I've got things more squared away I was able to deduce what's going on with the front panel. The input hole is loose or something. I brought up the sound properties dialog and plugged the headphones in but the default green check remained on the speakers. When I wiggled it a bit it jumped back and forth between the speakers and the headphones. Once I got it to stay on the headphones I barely moved the cable and it jumped back to the speakers! :-( Of course iTunes balked at this and refused to go after that began happening. Not sure if there is anything that can be done about the botched front input now. SIGH... always something!

Which headphones are those, not for cell phones I hope, a bit different type of connectors on them.

I'm using some in ear types I use with my Mp3 player but they worked a couple of weeks ago in this panel. If there is a different connector I need then let me know - (this has the two black rings) They are Philips. I love them because they are in ear but not those new ones that go all the way in, those make my canals itch like crazy. I HATE over the ear headphones because they all hurt my ears, the cartilage gets sore after about an hour and them make my ears sweaty. So I kinda need in ear but just not all the way in and the Philips are the only ones I've found that are affordable and have good sound.

PS. IF this is not the correct connector then is there a bit I can buy to convert them to the correct input?

I asked about them because some smaller device ones like phones can have 3mm instead of 3.5 mm jacks, just a few days ago I run into that trying to use Samsung Galaxy earphones in my tower case and found about difference as 3.5mm are more accepted standard.

Yea, I BELIEVE these are 3.5's. I'm actually looking at this device:

Amazon.com: Syba SD-CM-UAUD USB Stereo Audio Adapter, C-Media Chipset, RoHS: Computers & Accessories

It's got good reviews and ALLOT of folks have bought it for various reasons. Might be just what I need. I have plenty of USB ports.
