Driver working properly but there is no sound output

    Problem:
My laptop with OS Windows 8 will become no sound frequently. I try to find out the cause, and discover that the device is being used by another application, but I can't find any application using it, here is the screenshot:

Under this situation, when I open Window Media Player, this problem will occur:

I am sure that my sound drivers are working properly:

When I use Windows Troubleshooting function, here is what I discovered (Ignore the Bluetooth):

I am not sure about what is "Hardware changes might not have been detected", but after running Troubleshooting, my laptop have sound back, however, after about 30 minutes, my laptop will become no sound again, and I need to run Troubleshooting again and again to solve the problem. Does anyone know how to solve the problem completely so that I do not need to run Troubleshooting again and again?

One thing worth a try is boot in safe mode, then delete the device from Device Manager. Reboot normally. Windows should reinstall the driver. It seems to work more than half the time.

The sound problem you are having is caused by a recent windows update. See the other thread about this

No Sound- The device is being used by another application

Go to page 6 and apply my instructions (Reply #54). This will bring back your audio permanently

Ok. I had the same sound problem after updated windows 8 some days ago but i found a quick solution where you don t have to upgrade to 8.1 or uninstall any windows update.

You just need to enter to the Control Panel -> security and System -> System -> Device Manager

Then look for "sound, video and game controllers" put the cursor over it press right-click and select "scan for hardware changes"

3 secs after that you will have your sound working again, you gonna need to repeat this procedure every time the sound is gone in your PC and till now it always worked to me.

To be honest i found this solution in another forum days ago and i thought people here will eventually figured out the same solution but i see you didn t make it, so hope this will solve your problem for now, till Microsoft gives us a permanent solution in the next update.

In effect it's the same as deleting the driver. After deleting the driver on reboot you will get "Windows has found new hardware" and it will install the driver. Also there's a good chance the procedure won't need to be repeated. Not guaranteed but driver deletion/reinstall works for a lot of issues.
