Solved Random Sound failure

Hi,


My acer (aspier v5 171 Series) (windows 8) has been working smoothly for 1 year now, but since couple of days the sound would go off if something is not being played for sometime. then I need to restart to get it back...initially I though it happens after I lock the laptop but today it went off even without locking.


all the sound icons like speaker icon, volume bar is functional but with no sound.


any pointers?

Did you try updating your sound card drivers?

no luck, it says "Windows has determined that driver software for this device is upto date"

I can't help you, but I had the same thing about a month or two ago, which was the same as you (I.E. the audio intermittently wouldn't work unless I rebooted, although the on-screen volume display in the top left of the screen didn't work for me either).

I don't know how to cure it as the problem seemed to go away by itself, although I wonder if you go to Control Panel > Action Centre > Maintenance > View Reliability History whether it may give you some clues. With mine it came up with 'Windows Audio' and 'Audio Endpoint Builder' svchost APPCRASH errors (and showed faulty module as ntdll.dll). If it shows some errors then it could give you something to search for on google.

I would try uinstalling the sound driver entirely and then restarting your PC. See if it detects a sound card and go from there. Try that and see if that resolves the problem.

If that doesn't resolve the problem a refresh may be in order

Thanks ARC1020, I had no records in Reliability History it was blank. LoveNPower you the man... uninstalled the driver and restarted... the speaker icon was covered with red box then windows installed the driver, though it said installation not successful..it now works...atlest for now...
