Splitting headphones and speakers to play separate sounds?

I recently got a new desktop and that is the only problem that I have. I like to go on Skype and then play music/game sounds through the speakers, but on my audio devices list, it only shows up Speakers/Headphones. I know that the Realtek HD Audio Manager would let me split them up, but when I download that, all I get is some worthless Dell Audio thing (picture at the bottom) that barely has any options. So, is there anything I can do about this? I don't know how specific to be, so if you need more information, just say so.

Do you mean you want communications (skype) through the headphones and everything else though speakers?

I don't know that you can do that. Windows only allows one "default audio playback device", thus either the Speakers or the Headphones would be the default audio device.

Yes, sorry. I'm not very good at explaining it but you're exactly right. And the speakers and headphones are listed as one device.

I'm guessing the headphones are a standard jack connector then...not a USB device...

I can't think of a way to do this with a set of headphones that uses a jack connector...it's basically connected to the same circuit that runs the speakers...

if you had USB headphones then it would be possible as they appear as a seperate set of 'speakers' which can be set as the default communications device.

Would it work if I just used a USB adapter? I ask because I already have one that I used when my old computer's sound stopped working.
