Line In is missing from Volume mixer after reboot

Line In is missing from Volume mixer after reboot

I have an audio source connected to Line In and I use the volume mixer to un-mute the input when I want to listen to the audio from that source. I recently started having a problem where after re-booting Line In does not show up in my volume mixer and I do not hear audio from the Line In Source even though I have listen to this device active. (during boot up I do hear the audio for a fraction of a second)
To get Line In to work and show up in the volume mixer again, I have to go to manage audio devices under control panel and select the record tab. from there I can see Line In and I see that it is set as the default device and I can see that there is audio based on the indicator bars to the right of Line In. I then have to go to the Listen tab for Line In and uncheck "Listen to this device" and click on Apply, then Check "Listen to this device" and Click Apply. After doing all of this the Audio can be heard and Line In appears on the Volume Mixer until the next reboot where I have to perform those steps all over again.

I have the latest drivers and all MS updates for Windows 8.1 on a Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD5H Motherboard with Realtek R3.87 Driver dated 5/13/2014

What could be causing this ?

Have you tried setting the System Mixer as the default recording device? Then whatever is input will be heard. You also need the System Mixer to record audio from the internet.

    My Motherboard is a GAZ77X UD5H.

Thank you for the suggestion, I don't have system mixer as an option, is that an application that I can install, I did a search and have found several audio mixer applications but did not see one with that specific name.

I suspected that the issue may be cause by the new graphics adapter that I recently installed and I have discovered that if I disable the "Nvidia virtual audio device (wave extensible) (wdm)" device in Device manager that the problem does not occur. I hope I don't need that for anything, it would be nice if the manufacturer would provide information about the drivers and software that they install to let us know what it's for.

You should have "Realtek HD audio manager" in control panel, did you try setting things from there.

I have a similar problem. If I mute the line in the Windows 7 Volume Mixer and then reboot, the Line In application disappears and it stays muted. I found that if I select the playback tab in the Control Panel Sound, change the default device from the Speakers to Digital Audio and then change it back, the Line In application returns and is not muted.
